Keyboard playing app
Discussion
My gf used to play piano and wants to get back into it. I am going to buy her a full sized Midi keyboard as a present, but is there a way to connect the keybaord to some sort of app that allows you to go through tutuorials etc.? Can they connect via MIDI?
I was planning to buy an older keyboard but good quality - second hand, as opposed to some new cheap s
te off Amazon. (Which is what she would do cos she cant plan for s
t)
Hence the MIDI question. Any recommendations?

Not an expert, but I'd expect that most keyboards can connect to a computer these days. You'll find some keyboards with the old-fashioned round midi connections, but many will use midi over usb so you just need to connect the computer and the keyboard with a usb cable and install a driver on the pc.
There's an online tutorial system called Playground Sessions that looks promising.
For someone who has learned to play on a real piano, you may find that they don't like the unweighted keys of a keyboard. You can also look at digital pianos. Some models have weighted keys that feel like more like a real piano, but they will be more expensive than a keyboard.

As you say, lots like simplypiano, skoove, etc can just listen to what’s being played using the device mic and work from that.
Most modern digital pianos have a USB port for midi, many do Bluetooth midi. If you’re looking at older then it may be the old round plug midi and you can get a USB adaptor for those. Worth doing for quiet practice on headphones.
A weighted keys digital piano is what you want rather than an unweighted keyboard if they’re used to playing a piano. Prices of secondhand have gone mad over lockdown - may see some hasty purchases get sold over the summer. Else it’s remarkable how good a digital piano you can get for a few hundred quid upwards now - check reviews of Casio CDP-S100 or Roland FP10.

Yeah it was the FP10 im looking at on Ebay. I want to get her something second hand (Value) good brand (Casio or Yamaha etc) and reasonably comprehensive (Weighted and full 88 key)
But nothing too excessive like a proper synth etc.
Will think about it later today, thanks for all your help
