Price on request

Ok, fine. Herewith I request to know the price.

What happens then? I am I being told the price straight away? Like the dead-pan face equivalent of an email, just the numbers?
Or is the seller doing a lot of muttering under his breath, sucking in teeth until, finally, maybe even with a little fanfare, the proice is being revealed?

It’s not actually for sale, simply advertised as I promised my significant other it would be... right?

Surely POA isn’t an actual sales tactic?

I always find if something for sale is hard work to buy it’s not worth the effort

My wife often shows me stuff for sale on Facebook, lots of items in a single picture with the caption “ message me for detail and prices”

How does that work, 100 people asking for the detail etc, then them replying into everyone. Sign of a moron or similar

I’ve noticed on Rightmove that these places show up in searches using a price range so there must be some sort of shadow price used separate from the poa. Do a search of a big enough area and you’ll see it show up between others and give you an idea what price they are using.

That our it means I can't afford it (more often the case in eg a jewelers).

Often see this with a generic 3 bed semi and think just put the price in.

It would put me off too but I think it does attract some buyers, like those dating sites that say only good looking people can join etc, it creates a want for some to know they can make it or afford the item etc.

Perhaps also it puts off time wasters but like you say I’d expect it just creates more hassle as a message requesting the price takes a few seconds online. It’s not like the old days when you might have had to phone up or contact the seller in person etc.

Its either to make it seem expensive and make the buyer feel special.
Also helps if you list by price as they usually come top or bottom.
Can also be used to hide silly priced things, eg put a 205GTi up for £50k it will go viral with everyone moaning.
It normally puts me off.

The Italians are good at this, everything they advertise on FB is 'PM for price'. If you've ever had the unfortunate experience of dealing with them you'll probably agree they're from a different planet.

Also, I'm currently looking at a car on Ebay, the vendor says you have to message him for certain pictures of it, I have no idea why this is

To me secrecy suggests dishonesty.

I ignore any adverts like that. If a seller wants to sell something then put the price up, it's fundamental to the sale. Having to ask what the price is isn't going to entice me to buy.

I think I have been told on cars it’s so they can change the price without having to own up that they are having to drop the price constantly to try shift it.

Like if you tried to sell a Senna 800k realise it’s not going to happen start having to kick big chunks off the asking. If it’s POA you can just adjust your expectations discreetly.

Absolutely this. Would never open discussion with POA people, they typically believe that their offering is at some type of premium to everything comparable on the market.

When shopping in far flung lands (remember those days ) it seems almost every trinket shop the missus wants to look in has the items with the price ticket carefully placed face down so you can’t see it. Not a chance of getting me in there.

This annoys me as much as the people who as in FB groups 'what's it worth'. If you really wanted to sell its not hard to look on other selling sites and gauge a price they are being advertised for. When you do say its probably worth ex amount, they then complain that's too cheap, or their car has this spec or had loads of work done.

Just choose your own price then FFS.

I think it's crept in to selling anything now, I have seen it on Facebook Marketplace and Gumtree, either POA or the other favourite is "Offers".

Meanwhile, if they just typed abc park into google maps it would ha e popped up in a lot less typing

My wife has shown me the usual village oiks who are now selling FM Fragrance on Facebook

That’s all weird, you have to tell them what fragrance number you want then they send you a price

It’s cheaper by including a load of middle men dole spongers, makes no sense but yet the plebs lap it up

I went in to a wine shop in St Emilion that had one section, all behind glass, with no prices on. The salesman said they don't put prices on the really expensive ones as they got fed up with so many people taking photos of them and they were worried the labels would fade
