A quick Google would suggest the GPU has failed? This bar of screen noise on lower third. It's only 18 months old too which is disappointing. On plugging it in to another monitor, the image is clear which could suggest the screen has a fault.

It might be worth trying to get it into an Apple Store, to see what they have to say, you might even get a 'Good Will Gesture' out of them...

You could also try the "I would have come sooner but we've been in lockdown".

I'd be giving your local Apple store a call, as it should not fail in 18 months.

Don't forget that the 12 month Apple warranty is IN ADDITION to your statutory consumer rights of 6 years. Even Apple's warranty page says this, so try them before taking it anywhere else.

https://www.apple.com/uk/legal/statutory-warranty/

Apple Warranty page said:
Under consumer laws in the UK, consumers are entitled to a free of charge repair and (depending on the circumstances) may be entitled to a replacement, discount or refund by the seller, of defective goods or goods which do not conform with the contract of sale. For goods purchased in England or Wales, these rights expire six years from delivery of the goods and for goods purchased in Scotland, these rights expire five years from delivery of the goods.

I second the opinion to take it to an Apple store. A few years ago, the screen on my MacBook went blank. Took it to the Apple store in Aberdeen, they ran a diagnostic and informed me that it was a known defect and would be sorted free of charge. About 10 days later, I received a text to say my computer was ready. About £700-worth done at no cost to me.

.......and definitely back up to cloud and Time Machine while you are able to do so.

Good luck.smile

Thanks all. It transpires the notebook was purchased by the business so strictly 12 months. Apple ran some tests and said it's the screen, quoting £500 odd to repair as an estimate.

I've seen that 2013 ish MacBooks did have a known fault and had an extended recall/replacement. I've had a lot of Apple products and this is the first MacBook problem. Just bad luck. I completely agree than 18 months is unacceptable. Cheers

That is both bad luck and a bit disappointing.

I've ran my last couple of MacBook Pro's to 7 or 8 years and they have still been perfect, as have many others

FWIW Apple recently fixed my MBP screen in 9 days after I smashed it. £570.00, drop off at a store, fixed at a repair centre and delivered back to my house.

That's a pain. My MBP is going on 10 years...just a SSD and Ram upgrade. As soon as they get rid of the stupid Touch Bar I'll get a new one....mb next year.

Mines MBP 15 retina is late 2013 so coming up on 8 years old and never had an issues, runs like a dream on Big Sur. The Touch Bar ones seem to have issues with the keyboard.

Will probably upgrade to a 16' MBP but just can't justify £2600 for the same spec when my current one is running well. In 2013 including AppleCare I paid £1185
