I've had the original Ring doorbell for quite a few years, and always got on well with it. Recently, as I posted on here, the 'live view' function is seriously hit or miss and it's pretty irritating.

I'm wondering if I bite the bullet and buy the newest generation? Or is that just chucking £100+ down the drain as my one really should be working and no need to upgrade it?

No need for people to post that Ring are rubbish etc, I like it and it does the job for me (when it worked as it should!)

Think the problem with Live View is down to the app and the firmware on the actual devices - I have issues both with then phone app (android) and PC app (which does work for me) with live view, though much of the time the system still seems to record what I can't see, however my Amazon Echo Show has no problems - looking at the Android Play Store a lot of people have been complaining about the same including on the Ring 3 (I'm Ring 2 BTW)

So upgrading to the latest one might achieve nothing? Damn

From what I can tell. My experience as a whole has been hit and miss, however the Eufy alternative I looked at seems to suffer the same issues so I've stuck with my Ring.

Yet another case of tech working perfectly for years and then deciding not to. Why can't things just be left alone!

When my Ring 1 broke one month out of warranty I picked up a Ring 2 as it was that small period when it was half price, prior to being replaced by the version 3.

I’m finding the 2 a lot more reliable than the original, plus better quality. Around the same time I did ‘upgrade’ my internet to 4G increasing the upload speed from 2mbps to around 40mbps and this could have had a greater impact.

We've got the Ring 3+ and it seems pretty good. The 4 second preview gives you a bit of warning that the Amazon driver is approaching too. Live view is good in daylight, but not so good at night, unless the sensor is activated.

What are the benefits of these, as opposed to normal, er, doorbells?

For me it was the fact I could see who was ringing the doorbell on my phone instead of always going to the door to find it was yet another delivery for my bloody upstairs neighbour.

I have the Eufy system and I have to say it's bloody good. No monthly fee either for storage etc.

Having said that there is a 5 second delay when trying to have a conversation with someone at the door over it. Video is fine, it's just the audio. Can be a bit frustrating but not insurmountable once you're aware of it.

None of them are perfect yet.

Ours alerts you if there is someone outside the front door without them ringing the bell. We did have cctv, but it got stolen (psychotic neighbour), so the Ring is more discreet.

Sorry, couldn’t help a giggle when you said the CCTV was pinched.

I know ! It was only a magnetic mount, but they knew what they were doing. Just after midnight a piece of paper was put in front of the lens and they pulled the camera off and ran off with it. I'd had words with our neighbour a few hours before, so they are chief suspect.

Another advantage (does Eufy do this as well ?) is that if your doorbell is pressed when you're out your phone will receive an alert allowing you not only to see who's at the door but also to speak to them. Of course the speaker on the Ring is near useless but you can just about get instructions across to delivery drivers while those around you wonder why you are shouting at your phone.

Ring also works with IFTTT. So when somebody rings, it can flash the Lightwave RF lights, and play,‘There’s somebody at the door’ over the Sonos, if you’re that way inclined!

Assume this works for the floodcam too? My Alexa says when there is motion at the front door so similar principle I guess? Can you buy devices to flash when motion is triggered in case I don't have my phone on me?

CCTV camera theft is quote common, I had two nicked off a site that I had installed in Jan. Both nice 4K IP cams worth £100 +. Last year had two incidence of camera theft. I now install more discrete cams and scratch off the manufacture name.

Ring doorbells get nicked as well, nice and shinny and expensive, just screwed to the wall with a couple of 1" 8s.

After the camera incident, the Ring has the biggest screws I could fit and a large sticky pad too. They do offer a free replacement if it is stolen though.

Do they supply a flat pattress mount? The last one I fitted only had two types of angled mount, if you wanted it flat you had to screw it directly to the wall, makes using bigger fixings difficult.

Bt you do have a chance of some nice video footage of the person steeling it (assuming they don't pull something over their face and they are not known to the local/regional police identification team).
