Anyone play? I haven't played in almost 20 years but recently started to get back into it.

I've found a great site that's free with a quality UI. If anyone fancies a game, sign up and add me as a friend - welshjon81.

If we get a few of us, maybe we can organise some sort of tournament?

Wasn't sure where to post this so the lounge seemed a good a place as any!

I used to be a reasonable player in my teens, but didn't keep it up and now my eldest son can beat me easily. Got an uncle that was in the British team in the 1960s.

Loved watching The Queen's Gambit on Netflix. Made me think what might have been if I'd had more application and talent.

I'm an average club player, play every week and belong to the local chess club.

Face to face league chess has transferred well online during Covid and matches are still taking place regularly.

We use Lichess a free service and it works very well.

We don't see the opponent just the board.

Teammates can spectate online as they might in a normal match by wandering around looking at the games in progress.

https://lichess.org/

Lots of training puzzles and practise stuff available as well as real time games with random strangers and strong players from around the globe.

It's a growing sport/game and exercises the grey cells. Try it..

I used to play it as a teenager, although never to a particularly high standard. My brother was pretty good at it, I think he had a BCF rating of around 180.

Was beaten by my 9 year old grand-daughter when I suggested a game last Sunday.
Will carry the shame and teasing for quite a while I suspect.

Just started but on chess.com, seems to be the most popular site.
Am spending some time each evening playing tactical puzzles and mates which is helping.

By coincidence I just bought a set 2 weeks ago as my daughter was interested. I couldn’t even remember the rules. It’s been quite good fun but I literally have no strategy.

Up to about 1800 now, but if I'm tired or bored or distracted, it bombs.

I use Chess.com
Seems pretty good to me.

I notice a flaw in your plan....

You neglected to tell us the name of the site play on hehe

Besides that, I’d be up for a game humiliating defeat.

Used to play well, but fell out of favour with the game.
Might take it back up again.

I play on lichess sometimes, but rarely (very rarely) win.

Eric rosen (imrosen) on youtube / twitch is well worth watching, and if in the mood theres gothamchess (imlevey), chessbrah (2 gm's) and gm hikaru, all make.watchable content.

The depth that these proper players can see is crazy, as is their knowledge of common openings, lines and traps.

I think there is a key bit of info missing from your post! What site is it? Lichess?

I tend to play quick 2 to 3 min games, which does NOTHING for improving so I've stayed the same level for years.

I'm around 1200-1300 on Chess.com, but tend to have long losing/winning streaks and can't work out why this is.

If anyone wants a game, let me know.

Black won this game as white resigned when the queen moved as per arrow. Can anyone tell me why the white pawn in f2 could not take the queen and therefore carry on?

Ok forget it. Was just writing the above when realised the black bishop has pinned the pawn. I’ll post it anyway biggrin You may see why my daughter is beating me...

I'm a rubbish player but I do enjoy it. I was very pleased with myself when I worked out what your post meant.

Mrs U and son #2 both play well, but they're rubbish at changing cambelts and water pumps.

I enjoy doing the practice exercises on lichess, you can do them over and over again:
