I was scanning an article about Ellen Page this morning.
Now Eliot Page.
My newsfeed doesn’t usually throw up celebrity stuff but this got through. I really liked his character in Umbrella Academy so did give it a quick read.
Turns out he has been subjected to lots of abuse on line.
This made me think who are these people?
Who can be arsed putting together a horrible message to send to someone they don’t know?
This is, obviously, not restricted to Mr. Page but also seems to effect many people. Similar is when a ‘celebrity’ posts pictures of themselves online and then people send messages commenting on how fat they are etc etc.
Who are these people? Do you know any? Have you sent a nasty message? Felt so strongly that you sent a message to someone you don’t know?
I’m not including MPs or organisations.
Judging by what I read about the volume of this stuff, then someone on here must know someone.
What are they like? Their motivations?
I will state up front: never been on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram etc. So the answer might be obvious....but I’m missing it.
I am aware that I don’t get any abuse because I have no online profile and assume few people have any interest in my accomplishments, clothes, breakfast etc. But that doesn’t apply to people that need a profile as a modern marketing tool; so staying off is not really possible for them.

Someone I used to work for (who is now senior management in the NHS) has a Twitter account that is used for just this purpose and it’s even connected using his name etc...
He tends to aim his anger and bile at sports people and it’s very pathetic.
Proper little man syndrome. He’s not a pleasant character and had lots of previous for purposefully sabotaging people around him (including his own staff)!to make himself look better.

One has to assume the most of it is related to insecurity, jealously, supressed feeling of sexual inadequacy, religious fanaticism, political indoctrination and of course.......because a lot of people just appear to be utter

Because it makes them feel all warm and fuzzy inside that they aimed an insult at someone.
In their tiny little minds, they have acheived Victory!!! Despite the fact that most people who are on the receiving end of these jibes, probably couldn't care one iota what small minded little keyboard warriors think of them.

ON various forums over decades I have been called all the names you can imagine, been threatened, sent death threats.
It does not affect me at all, it might affect me a little if I am going somewhere and I know a person might be there who is one of these people, but really it is not likely to go anywhere.
I get why some people are affected by it, but I think some people can differentiate between online trolling and real life stuff.
I would not cope so well with real life equivalent, and not sure why I can with online, maybe I have a thicker skin online, who knows. But I find most of it utterly insipid and just ranting or venting.

Because ultimately, you know the chances of you ever meeting someone who calls you a name online are so remote it's not worth bothering about. Lets be honest, do you know what i look like? So if we wanted to have a nasty and vitriolic argument, then the chances of us ever meeting up and it getting physical is ......ooooh.....lets say....zero!
But if i lived in the next street to you, and knew who you were online, the chances of it getting physical are greatly increased. Like i said earlier, keyboard warriors who think that their stupid little insults make them big and tough.
The trolls and bullies get all of the headlines, but the lefty SJWs are much worse.

More recently I challenged the orthodoxy on things like BLM and the Covid response, and the same people come at you like deranged psychopaths.
In short, Twitter in particular is a total toilet and should be avoided.

Yeah....banter is one thing....but at what point does it stop being "about the bants"* and be about making someones life a misery?
