What are office birthday attention seekers doing now
Discussion
Years ago send I was office based you always had a handful of people who loved any attention they could get
Had one person who would start dropping hints a few days prior that it was their birthday coming up in emails
Day comes and they come in with a badge, balloons etc. Cakes brought in and email sent around, to let anyone who didn’t realise that it was in fact their birthday. Then they have to go to pub or for a meal again a big affair.
Perhaps some flowers sent to the office, then they want to f
k off an hour early from their desk because it’s their birthday, but when you go to leave at the normal time they are gassing away with Patricia from accounts
So, what are they doing to celebrate during lockdown, sellotaping themselves to b and m window or something daft.
It’s not my birthday

What you describe sounds like you work in an office with ladies? Fair enough the fairer do it but the blokes in some factories will gaffer tape your head to a roof supporting truss pole if you dare to mention or hint at it. Not where I work, they are nice, they tell you to f
k off instead but in a nice way.One of the joys of working from home is I don’t have to listen to fat men talking about football and how “we nearly had them”
“We” ? You couldn’t run a f ing bath.
And weddings. 2 years I’ve listened to some girl waxing on about her wedding to come. I wouldn’t care but for the two years you’ve been talking about it you’ve done nothing to lose weight to fit into that expensive dress.

I had a job where I was the line manager of a team of middle aged ladies. Birthdays and Christmases were a blur of mutual present buying, After being included for my first Christmas there, I made it clear I didn’t want to be involved, which was met with several accusations that I was a grumpy git. In the end I had to move on, part of the reason for doing so was I couldn’t handle the day-to-day emotions and b
k off instead but in a nice way.
hiness that when on within the team. I may well sound a bit of a misogynist dinosaur but I’d much rather manage a team a blokes any day, who just get on with the job and tell you to f
k off if they disagree or are aggrieved, at least everyone knows where they then stand.Jasandjules said:
In my old office it was just you had to buy cakes.
pretty much the norm so what I started doing a few years ago was not mentioning it was my birthday and just letting it pass. However if I knew it was someone in my teams birthday at one job pre covid always used to buy them a mini birthday cake from bakery on my way in. I’ve never mentioned my birthday outside HR/pensions paperwork but I’ve had a number of instances over the years where a colleague (invariably female) has got hold of the information and then wants to mark it.
As I see little point in getting excited at marking an arbitrary period of uninterrupted respiration, and don’t even want my family making a fuss about birthdays, this is quite unwelcome but it somehow always seems a bit churlish to point it out.
I now tend just to be on leave the week of my birthday as it is at a time of year when it suits me to be away anyway.

I never understood this. It's your birthday so you have to buy everyone else in the office cakes? f
k off.
I always kept quiet about it - no-ones business but mine.
There seemed to be the reverse rule in an office full of women at a place I worked. It was always piled high with cakes, crisps etc every time I walked through it, which was most days. It was like one of them said 'it's my un-birthday today, like the Mad Hatter'. Another would point out that it was their un-birthday as well, and they should go out & ram-raid Greggs to celebrate

But you only have to buy the Buns once a year.

I work with around 20 people.
Buns galore a couple of times a Month.
£25 once a year. It's a good deal in my book.
It's a big thing on the Factory Floor in Yorkshire!
