Who foots the bill if damage is caused by Police (UK)

One thing I've always wondered but never really knew who or where to ask ... Does anyone know who foots the bill if your car is damaged by the Police during a Police chase? I'm not on about the perps themselves crashing into it or something, I'm on about the actual coppers who decide to use your car as a table!
You see clips on YouTube and newspaper websites where the Police are chasing someone on foot, manage to grab hold of the perp and then slam him onto the bonnet of a random car. I saw a video on Facebook of some copper who thought he was filming for a new series of The Professionals and actually tried to (unsuccessfully) slide across a cars bonnet. Frankly I'd be F
KED right off if I came outside to see Police clambering all over my car to arrest someone rather than pinning him against a wall or something! Do they not give a s**t about dents and scratches?

I don’t. It happens. They’ll pay out. I broke someone’s garden table years ago during a foot chase. Owner had to provide something proving how much it was to replace/repair and it was paid out fairly quickly from what I remember. In my youth, a Policeman actually did the slide across the bonnet thing. They were in plain clothes, so we didn't know who they were until it was too late!
My friend was racing them in central London and we thought that we were the bees knees until the passenger put his badge against his window and pointed for us to pull over....
