Cars that magically gain 20% in price for seemingly no reaso

I've recently looked at 2 cars which garnered very little interest, in fact one of the sellers never stopped messaging me. They weren't right for me, both good cars needing nothing.
Both at 2 separate dealers.

All of a sudden within weeks of each other they've gained £20k (ferrari) and £10k (bmw) for what appears to be no reason, and, no surprise both cars are still sitting there.

What could be the reason, perhaps they discovered an issue and are trying to recoup the repair costs? Very odd

Perhaps these dealers are amateur psychologists. There used to be an independent near me who sold decent stuff. If something “stuck” in the showroom, he removed it ( took it home?) and it would reappear a few weeks later at a higher price. Another trader, still going ,had an arrangement with a more basic car lot which was situated on a busy main road, often with slow traffic, and after a while he would move a slow seller down there.

Some people think if it is "too cheap" there must be something wrong with it.... I've seen dealers do this with a few cars then they will reduce the price in a few weeks again and if you look to buy will not move on the price because they "have already reduced it"...

At the moment, in my opinion, the gap between advertised prices and any achieved prices for a lot of stuff must be huge. Don't forget with lockdown restrictions it's still only click and collect or home delivery allowed for any dealers, big or small, until the 12th April. No casual viewing or test drives until then, so in reality not much has been happening. This coupled with some decent government support and there's not been such an incentive to 'price to sell' like there might be in 'normal' times. Prices for some stuff that is advertised is well over the top. Example - pre-facelift S550 Mustangs (15-18) - loads for sale in the £32k-£33k region that have been advertised for months and months. They just are not shifting at that money, but no one seems to be dropping anything to make a sale right now. Maybe we'll see a bit of a 'correction' once people can actually get out browsing and buying in person.

Is this Autotrader? It seems there is a pricing algorithm that adjusts prices dealers are offering automatically based upon where it thinks the market is.

Also, I suspect it is easier for dealers to move the price about (both up or down) now that they sell via online ads rather than the printed Autotrader or local paper.

Also, there a lot of supply and demand fluctuations at the moment so it is entirely possible that 'the market' has strengthened for certain cars which means they can ask more than they could last month.

But they aren't selling and I think in was the only one to view both cars in months. They dealers were more pushy than usual. The only thing I can think of is they had issues which are now resolved. But saying that, the ferrari was still under warranty, unless it was paintwork. Very strange

As someone who works in the motor trade, I can confirm that the market has been really busy and our monthly sales are only marginally down...this is in the more mainstream market though.

I guess it depends on your market, and maybe there are regional variations. Definitely a long way from normal activity happening in my area, particularly at the smaller places that I deal with. Only being able to sell via click and collect or home delivery has cut out a big percentage of activity here, especially with the older buyers who still want to view, test drive etc. before you will see any commitment. Personally I think we will see a lot of new activity from the 12th onwards and hopefully cover some lost ground but who knows, nothing is for certain.

I've noticed this... nowhere near the same limit, but I have some cars saved on AutoTrader for the other half with a maximum budget of £4k.

Sometimes I check in with my list for reference or to see what's sold, and have seen cars that were obviously under £4k go up to £4.5k or £5k. Very strange.

No, car still has all my stuff on it from my ring trip in November. Hence the mount and crash helmets bouncing around inside. Lol

It’s likely to net buyers within certain budget criteria, those looking to spend 40k won’t be looking at the 30k. budget band. Shift the up the budget band and try to hook those on. Never know unless it’s tried.

But the cars I'm talking about are now both the most expensive at the mileage and spec, and by some margin
