I am thinking of buying a V12S style front grille from a supplier in Poland.

Given I’m in the UK, will I have to pay duty on this post Brexit?

TIA

If its from Michal Pastryk they know what they are doing, the only real issue is if it gets damaged or lost, its either pay tax ot take the risk. I have had lots of stuff from him, always well packaged so dont think thats the issue

I would assume that VAT and Customs Duty will be payable to the courier before delivery can take place.

It is, the value is put on the package by the sender.

Here is the break down of duty costs, you will also need to pay the courier a fee, normally around £11.00

Customs Duty
You’ll be charged Customs Duty on all goods sent from outside the UK (or the UK and the EU if you’re in Northern Ireland) if they’re either:

excise goods
worth more than £135
If you’re charged Customs Duty, you’ll need to pay it on both:

the price paid for the goods
postage, packaging and insurance
Type and value of goods Customs Duty
Non-excise goods worth £135 or less No charge
Gifts above £135 and up to £630 2.5%, but rates are lower for some goods - call the helpline
Gifts above £630 and other goods above £135 The rate depends on the type of goods and where they came from - call the helpline
You pay Customs Duty on excise goods of any value.

Thanks for that - bit of a thread hijack, but there are a few cases now of people ordering car spares from a Uk company and finding it’s a Uk web url but actually companies based in Italy, Germany etc, and people getting stung for taxes.

I had a situation recently where I bought from skf - and it turns out it came from Italy - fortunately it was £149 and I didn’t get a tax / duty charge.

ask the supplier if the price they're charging includes their local VAT, if it does, get them to send the product incoterms DDP (delivered duties paid) and it will arrive to you with local duties and VAT paid up, they pay it and essentially it offsets the fact they have collected extra funds from you on a non VAT transaction.

I run a mid size B2C retailer and this is how we are doing UK-Eu sales.

Or get someone you know who runs a VAT registered business to get it on your behalf so they can reclaim the lot.

I recently ordered some carbon parts from Poland. Didn't receive any import duty or vat requests.

Parcel seemed to get stuck in Customs for about 4 days but was relatively quick.

I too worried about this, but in the back of my head wasn't there some kind of agreement with the EU on car parts due to the car industry over here.

Shouldn't be any import or customs duty for stuff from the EU .. there is a no tariff and no quota deal as part of the Brexit deal

I placed an order at the end of March this year. It was delivered a month later, and there was nothing extra to pay at the time………until the courier sent me the bill today. Not sure why there has been such a long delay, as I actually expected to have the make the payment before it was cleared at customs. Just a heads up guys.

Oops! Shouldda kept your gob shut! I bet they saw your post here wink

On a serious note, I think early on post brexit couriers didnt have the mechanism in place to cope with the duty payment on clearance so some held goods up and manually chased for payment, whereas others let it go, knowing they would invoice later when their admin caught up.

Either way, taxes are taxes and the tax man is always gonna get ya!

It wouldn’t put me off getting the stuff from Poland (it’s normally very good) but I will be thinking I now need to add VAT.

I've ordered various parts for cars from Germany and Poland and every courier except FedEx contacted me first to pay the taxes and charges, saying if I didn't want to pay then the goods would be returned.

FedEx just delivered the item with no mention of charges, 4 months later I got an invoice from FedEx for 150GBP and 2 weeks later a chasing letter from a debt collection company.

I've told them I won't pay as I should have been informed at the time so I could refuse the parcel, and not charged 4 months later. Don't know what will happen yet.....

I think that’s exactly the point Adam. Different couriers seem to be operating in different ways. But I must admit I did think five months later was a bit rich! I expected to pay it before it was delivered so I’m not too fussed really. I just wanted to point it out in case anyone else was in the same position.
