Thinking about buying used but concerned about buying a bag of crap.

Cinch have a warranty programme £35 per month based on 12k per year.

With cinchCare, you get the continuous coverage of a warranty, regular servicing and breakdown plan for a single monthly price. This price is based on your mileage.

Looks like a no brainer for peace of mind, what do you think?

Doesnt look too bad really. Inclusions in servicing looks alittle light, no mention of coolant changes for example. Warranty has a few get out of jail free clauses in it like not covering items that "have come to an end of their normal life". Recovery only includes towing you to a local garage which could be an issue if you are far from home.

I think if you have an everyday sort of car that you don't mind getting serviced at Halfords it looks pretty good.

I wouldn't call it a no brainer, its costing you over £400 per year so you have to weigh up whether its worth it.

What age of car are you buying?

The servicing looks to be done by their 'centres' so if you buy a car with dealer servicing then you are going to be locked into their servicing as part of the deal so something to factor in.

For me, a warranty is about something major breaking that would otherwise have cost me ££££. They don't cover wear and tear obviously so the likes of tyres, brakes, clutches etc are going to come out of your pocket and statistically speaking, you are far more likely to need new tyres over 3 years of ownership than need to get a major engine issue fixed.

Personally, I have no interest in non dealer warranties having been stung by them beforehand trying to claim for something they said was wear and tear but wasn't but its your money so over three years its costing you £1260 at £35pm.

An interesting concept.

Could make potentially risky purchases such as the below more attractive:

I'll look forward to feedback about whether the warranty is any good.

They give 90 days free warranty anyway.

And if something major went wrong within the first six months you'd stand a good chance of getting them to pay for it anyhow.

Looks like Halfords do the servicing, to be fair it looks very well set up, the cars look presentable, the finance doesn't look to bad when compared to other used pcp's, all the info with regards to servicing, owners etc are there as well.

Quite. I guess if you’re content with staying on a PCP, the problem can be sidestepped.

I wonder how well Halfords would cope with a tricky tech problem?

I think it looks an awful lot like you’re trying to advertise something in which you have a personal interest to be honest.

I've generally found, to my expense over the years, is if its made of Metal, Plastic or Rubber.
It wont be covered!
They make their own rules up.
Claiming is near impossible.
Just save your £35 every month in a Bank Account.
If anything goes wrong you'll have a lump of cash to start you off.
Do a search. Warranties are easy money for sellers.
They try to steer you away from the fact that you have consumer rights anyway!

Absolutely!

Sounds perfect!

What could possibly go wrong?

Far from it.

I'm an insurance broker and know very little about the used car market.

I have a few options as my current lease ends.
New lease
Lease through the company scheme with Zenith (nothing inspiring available) at a good rate.
Buy a used car

My concern with used is should I get a warranty or not and just hope for the best with regular servicing and maintenance.

Used to do about 15k per year pre pandemic but our firm has a stance on limited client visits for the foreseeable.

Looking at the exclusions - Water ingress, exhaust system, corrosion, seizure, pipes, hoses, unions, core plugs, bushes, decokes, foreign object damage, air bags, gaskets, seals, oil leaks, mountings, fixing and fastening devices, serviceable components, and noisy parts that otherwise work as normal.

"noisy parts that otherwise work as normal." that's a load of potential claims rejected there already for wheel or diff bearing etc etc.

I’ve had mixed experiences with used car warranties over the years.

It can be a frustrating experience.

The OP is right that your consumer rights are your most powerful protection, initially at least. Saved my bacon on one occasion.

I wouldn’t underestimate the ability of modern cars to generate huge bills from failures - my wife’s Giulietta had an TCT actuator failure which would have costed £4k to fix and the cooling fan on my BMW F01 failed, which in turn damaged the ECU (DME) at a cost of £3k - so some sort of protection is worthy of consideration.

One of the other favorites is not covering something because it hasn't failed - starting to fail isn't covered, only then they exclude it because they now know about it because you have informed them, so as and example a tensioner is noisy on the cambelt but they won't cover it as it hasn't failed, however if you leave it until it fails and it takes the engine with it they won't cover it as you should have replace the tensioner(warranty's in general not specifically cinch)

I can only say that having watched a number of Cinch TV commercials.

1. I wouldn't buy anything from Cinch - just because of the vulgarity of the main character.

2. As a generalisation, purchased warranties are not a good idea. Statistically you are better of putting the money in a pot on the mantelpiece, then you will have a fund, if and when, it is needed.

Thanks folks.

If I go down the used route I think a side pot each month is looking like the wise option.

Appreciate the feedback.

Nope, not buying the explanation, your original post was written in ‘pr speak’, so unless you just copied and pasted it, I call covert advertising.

Hang on? You’re an insurance broker and you’re having to ask people about what, in essence, is an insurance policy?
