V6 carb and manifold needed.

I've got a Granada V6 carb gathering dust. Only thing is I'm not sure if it's a 2.3 or 2.8, the ID tags were usefully removed before I acquired it.
...ok, do you/does anyone know what size jets are fitted to a 2.8? As I'll rebuild it anyway for puece of mind.
I'm about to go outside to give the Bosch system one last chance.

Iain
one of the big problems with the FI system is that if it sits around for anylength of time it starts to get moisture in the system, and the tiny filters start to rust and everything starts to jam.
Toovey was the name of the chap in cannock that I got mine off.
although i think they were about to move ..

you could try the granade forums i did track a manifold down from there.
if you get really stuck i can lend you the one off the taz ( no choke mech) although i might need it for the sunday
if i can get simon or georg into the car.
you'll also need a different fuel pump. somthing like a facet red top, as the FI pump is too high a pressure.
You could also try Talking to wedge and if he cant help ask him for Tims number

You may find some spares or good info on this site:
www.granada-and-scorpio-online.com/forums.
The engine was also fitted to Sierra XR4s, so maybe some ideas on their forums.
I have a spare ignition amplifier module, in case you find that to be faulty.

Iain,
The CIS system is the very reason that I pulled the V6 out of my 280i, but that was because here are NO parts in the States. If you decide to do this, you can still use the high pressure pump if you place a "Tee" in the fuel lines and connect the feed line, the return line and the line to the carb all together. The excess pressure is returned to the fuel tank when the carb float is lifted. I tried this on my conversion and it works fine and will save you lots of wiring and about $100. Before you jump into this try setting the timing by ear and made absolutly sure there are no exhust obstructions. Mufflers and catalytic converters can get plugged with mice and can corrode(cat.)quickly with inactivity. Good luck !

Thanks for the help guys, i've spent most of the evening pulling bits apart checking they work etc. the only obvious bit is the rubber cap ontop of the fuel metering unit (that feeds the air to the butterfly body) has some cracks in it, I've checked it before, but i gave it a really good twist and pull this time, so im going to Quicks tomorrow to try and source a new replacement. Sounds logical, if that is letting air in, effectively leaning off the mixture when the manifold vacuum is at its greatest, hence no acceleration etc. If that doesnt work i'll bite the bullet and go for carbs.
I spoke to a very helpful gent at JW Developments in Wolverhampton today and it looks about £350 for a new Weber carb (forget the code, not a DGAS, DGMS maybe???) 2nd hand manifold, but no throttle linkage or water take of housing for the top rad hose, then i need a filter housing (£50 from DT)....alternatively there is a 38DGAS currently at 99p on ebay, and the bloke has said he'll throw in a manifold and all the bits for an extra tenner...
Which should i choose, the £350 option that will work or the less that £350 that should work?
Graham, thanks for the offer, but hopefully it wont get to that stage! Am I right in thinking your Taz engine, with standard length valves
, was a stock engine with a carb added? What power did tht offer?

Well the 38DGAS was used on the 3 litre Essex, so should be up to the job. Might just need an adapter plate to the (2.8 Granny) manifold.
That carb does have a fuel return pipe, incidentally, as not all webers do.
The carbed 2.8 only gave 135 horses though.
Personally I think I'd keep trying to fix the Injection.

from memory the throttle linkage wasnt too difficult to make, the water housing was a bit of a pain to find. but i did locate a 2nd hand one in the end.
for the filter we used a k&n
one of the quickest v6 tasmin last season was running a carb (Tim) you could do much worse that give him a call.
The oval racers used to use the 2.8 with carb and get a smidgen over 200bhp !!! ( with head work) they now use 2.9
my engine was basically an old taz challenge spec. lightened, balanced , steel timing gear, cam, arp bolts, matched ports, 3 angle valves, matched combustion chambers etc... kicked out about 185 at its best...
I very much doubt a standard 2.8 ever had more than 150

Iain,
John Wade at JW developments is the Guru on Ford v6 engines and i would be tempted to take any advice he has to offer. I have used him in the past to breathe some extra life into an Essex v6 engine for my scimitar and the man really knows his onions, ask him these same questions and we hill give you the correct answers (he'll probably talk for an hour and give you all sorts of specs he could take your engine to too).
regards
Nick

An hour how do you manage to get him off the phone after only an hour!!!! everytime I call him the first thing he does is complain how busy he is, and then talks for Europe never mind England....
He does Know his stuff though and is very helpfull.
When we had a problem with slipping valve collets at rockingham. Pops drove over to JW, he found us all the bits we needed, and even made up a tool for compressing the valve springs, with the heads on !!! ( ever heard of the rope trick, it does work)

Yeah i slightly mislead you there it could be up to 2 hours and if you ever go to his place its 4 hours of him telling you how busy he is whilst he plys you with cups of tea. (yes i heard the rope trick works but never seen it done)

Right i've just spent almost 3 hours driving round to find an new air duct. I went to my local Bosch service centre, who said we get all our bits from the Bosch distributor the other side of Wrexham, so went there to be told no its a Ford part, so off to Quicks, via two local auto factors.
The air duct is "No Longer Availible" on the Ford data base, thats for Sierra, Capri, Granada or Cortina. I went to my local breakers who's never let me down in the past...alas theres a first for everything.
I'm going to get the mastic out and seal up the duct if that doesnt work then it's carb time, somehow i cant see Chassis33 being driven to BBWF.
With warm up regulators reputedly costing £250 a shot, and other bits becoming unavailable, i think ultimately its time to look for a later engine...the 4l Ford V6 in Explorers is a Cologne engine...a RV8 doesnt fit the chassis on the early V6 cars, but an LS1 is smaller than an RV8...

you can have a look at any of the fi bits i've got knocking around to see if their any use...
im sure you cn get an rv8 in an early chassis i m sure Moore have done it ??

From memory the bible says it can't be done, therefore it cant be done, if i prove the bible wrong the whole Wedge existance gets destroyed...you've seen Dogma havent you?
I'll ask Richard over the weekend.

Surely a Cossie 24 valve would be easier (and cheaper) ?
See www.pixeltechnology.co.uk (wedgepages).
See www.pixeltechnology.co.uk (wedgepages).
Progress, possibly.
I've taken off every air hose and wiggled and waggled it put copious amounts of Dow Corning on every little hairline crack i found, the dow corning-ed every joint as i re-assembled, made sure all jubilee clips were extra secure etc etc
Really OTT stuff, but it certainly idles better, not that it was idling poorly (you dont know you have crap reception til you get a new aerial) pickup seems less hesitant, and it seems to have power across the 100ft of our yard.
Haven't had chance to road test it yet, waiting for a quiet moment to run it down to the village and back.
There's hope!!!
