I'm just going to have a quiet little rant about the Police now, so appologies to all BIB on the list ...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Just had a somewhat un-necessary altercation with a highly ignorant, Pig Headed, Obnoxious Traffic Policemen.

taking the missus to pick her car up from a service, as we were driving down the local high street she asked me to stop at Boots so she could collect the holiday photos.

No parking places so I nip into the bus stop (lay-by) and the missus darts into Boots whilst i sit in the car with the nipper. Been sitting there about (and maybe not even) 2 minutes when I hear "OI !" shouted at the top of some-ones voice - just ignored it.

And again - "OI ! YOU !"

I look round, and there is Mr Obnoxious Plod sitting in his nice shiny Volvo Estate (parked in the opposite bus stop) shouting out of the window at me.

"YES YOU" bellowed across the traffic at the top of his voice.

"MOVE IT NOW"

I couldn't believe it, the lunchtime throng of pedestrians all stopped to see who/what the Policeman was shouting at.

"I SAID MOVE IT - NOW!"

Red rag to a bull unfortunately, out of the car I got, "I beg your pardon, but just who the hell do you think you are, shouting and screaming in the street like a lunatic. If you have got a problem with where I'm parked try using some simple courtesy and the decency to get out of your car and walk over and tell me."

Out of Boots comes Mrs Mantis - to late I'm on a roll!

"people like you make me sick, you complain that the public have no respect for you, to gain respect you have got to give respect. I've certainly got no respect for you as you have not shown me any respect at all, and Ive got a good mind to go into the local Nick and make a complaint about your attitude and your general conduct as I find it totally un-professional and offensive, what is your name?"

"Ok Sir, you have made your point, If you would move the vehicle please, and refrain from parking in the bus stop as it causes congestion if the bus cant get in."

"Certainly"

Now why couldnt he have approached me and asked me like that earlier on.

Into the car and moved it as POLITELY requested, Missus wasnt to impressed - "Im surprised he didnt nick you"

I believe you have got to stand up for yourself, if the Police Officer had spoked to me civilly and asked me to move the car in the first instance I would have complied without any form of argument, but he lost any form of respect I would have for him by bellowing "OI" at the top of his voice.

End rant!

Thoroughly agree. There is no need for anyone to give out this attitude... how much effor tis a bit of common courtesy.

At least he had the grace to admit he was in the wrong.. and top job for not just sitting and taking it.

Excellent! I throughly support the way you handled the situation. If everyone gave each other a little respect then we would live in a much nicer place. I always try and give respect to everyone until they loose it themselves. Well done!

Sounds like a school bully with that attitude .....

Top marks for puttin him right on the acceptable social graces of police work.

Wonder what he'd do if he came across a mugger in the process ....

Sorry - and I suspect I'm about to get flamed for saying this - but I think the copper was right, even if his attitude was OTT. Why should he ask you politely to stop being so inconsiderate? Why couldn't you have stopped briefly to drop your wife off and then driven round the block till she came out? People like you who park at bus stops "just while the wife goes to Boots" or on double yellows "just while she nips into Tesco's" cause absolute traffic chaos on my local high street, and I can't imagine it being any different on yours. But what the hell - so long as you get your holiday snaps, that's the main thing, isn't it?

Was he stopping a bus - NO. Was he keeping his eys open and prepared to move if a bus came along? Probably.

Agree with you on the double yellows, but bus stops (certainly these days when there aren't any friggin buses), but empty bus-stops with someone stayin in teh car to move it if necessary are fair game for really short (under 5 mins) stops. IMHO of course

It's the attitude though isn't it Dr Seuess. I'm a fan of your work by the way, especially Yertle the Turtle, but back to topic. Marcos was only doing what we all do from time to time. I'm sure if a bus had come along he would have moved... Old Bill's reaction was way OTT but sadly I've seen that sort of thing myself. They don't do themselves any favours by treating us all like scrotes.

Same thing happened to me and my mum, we had to pick up 6 black sacks of books from the local charity shop for the Chief Constables Book Stall at the Parish Fete!

Now, my mum, bless her, couldn't lift a bag so she went over to the bakery to get her lunch as she was doing this in her lunch break as a favor to the Policeman while I was loading all of the bags into the back of the car, so we're parked with hazard lights on and, some stupid traffic warden (you'll like this) on a police moped with a police badge parked next to the car in the middle of the road so people were avoiding HIS vehicle, and sais to me, "what do you think your doing?" Now I had a black sack full of books in my arms with a label on the side saying "BOOKS"! This bag was heavy so I went to put it in the back of the car and he put his hand across my chest to prevent me from doing so!
So I dropped the bag of books on his foot, and said "I WAS trying to load this bag of books into the back of the car for the Parish Fete!", after he finished hopping about in agony he said well I'm afraid you can't do this! (I had done 4 out of the 6 bags! and the central car park is a 5 minute walk away) So I said "Right well I'll unload all of these bags of books for which I am picking up for the Chief Constable, and you can bring them to the car in the Central Car park!" No he replies because that would be littering! !
Mum comes back with her lunch, and he starts to have a go at her, I finish loading up and he check's the front of the car 4 yes FOUR times to make sure he's got everything, and he gives us a ticket for CONVEINENCE SHOPPING

Nice one Marcos! Also, fair play to the dibble for not being a tw@t about it.

I don't agree with parking in places like that generally. I have done on occasion myself, but always with me in the car ready to move if required. On the exceptionally rare occasion I've parked somewhere inappropriate and left the car, I wouldn't have complained if I'd found a ticket on my car when I got back. Somehow I've managed to only get one parking ticket, and that was when my car broke down outside my girlfriends house and I didn't even realise I couldn't park there.

Yertis, I prefer Sam I Am (Green Eggs And Ham) myself

But what if everyone adopted the attitude that it's OK to park at bus stops till a bus comes along, and the police tolerated it? It just wouldn't work. The bus stops would be full to overflowing, some people might not notice the bus, or might be slow to get out of its way...it'd be a slippery slope leading to gridlocked town centres, and the tree-hugging car-haters would have a field day. All so that someone's wife doesn't have to walk a couple of hundred yards - not worth it IMHO. Unless you're John Prescott, of course...

Agree you were right to confront said Plod MM, and we've all done it (parked where we shouldn't), so what the hell.

Any cop gives me any crap (if unwarranted) and I make a big thing of getting a pen out the car and making a note of his number with as straight a face as I can muster! Their attitude soon changes.

If it's warranted. I stand there looking at my toecaps. Sometimes you gotta admit to being in the wrong.

I think he realised what a tw@t he had made of himself, the fact that he had picked on the wrong person (i can be an obnoxious bast@rd when I set my mind and mouth in motion) and the possible repercussions of his initial attitude (and the public audience)

Was it OK for Mr Obnoxious to park in the Bus Stop (opposite) before bellowing across the road at me.

[parking rant]
Outside the office is a part time clearway, intended to free up traffic flow during rush hour. So, do the wardens slap a ticket on & tell the drivers to hop it?
No.
They call up the towtruck, wait until its ready to load (blocking the entire side of the road) and only then slap a ticket on 5 microseconds before picking the car up & taking it away.

(a) I think this is grossly unfair and
(b) They're causing more of a hold up than the parked cars were in the 1st place.

Its besides the point that its a wide wide road with a single lane in either direction, so the parked cars aren't actually causing a hold up in the first place. Further up the road, where it narrows, its not a clearway!

License to print money? You betcha.
[/parking rant]

{edited to add:} I've seen 2 or more towtrucks queueing to pick up cars & the wardens working feverishly to ticket the cars...

Oh. And then the wardens hang around and nab the next lot of poor s0ds who pull up & park in the safeest possible place without noticing the 'no parking after 4pm' signs. Do they point out the signs and ask the drivers to move on? Do they fcuk. They just wait until the driver has left & then whistle up the next truck...
