Do I keep my Cayman (981) or get an older 911?
Discussion
Hi Guys,
So I'm in a bit of a tough dilemma.
I currently own a guards red Cayman 981, it has literally every package you can get. It's a base cayman but looks like a GTS as it came with a sport design pack. It has the sport wheel, PDK, Chrono, Heated seats, Bose, Sat Nav, PASM, The moving headlights, sports exhaust, the lot.
I've been paying the car off monthly for £650 a month. I've had it for around 2 years and I'm hitting the mark where I can refinance it costing me about 330 a month. Almost halving my monthly payments.
I've always wanted a 991.1 911. But right now, I'm not going to find one without a hefty deposit costing 650/month or less. I also kind of like the idea of paying less a month.
I saw most going between 40-55k.
The other issue here is, I have my first child coming in June. I daily drive my Cayman, but do have a Mini Countryman too that the misses drives and will be used to drive my daughter around mostly. So the two-seater isn't a massive hindrance as I'd just use it for when I go to shops, work and spirited afternoon drives.
Do you think it would be mad to sell my car and try and get into a 911 at 25-35k?
The added back seats would mean I could take my daughter around in it which is a massive plus for me. I also imagine a 911 would be quite a bit quicker than the Cayman.
It's a real tough decision as I love my current car but can't help think the 911 would be more practical and faster.
But also, any 911 that costs below 35k, has really old dated interiors, I also prefer PDK to manual.
In conclusion do I
Keep the Cayman, half the payments, not be able to drive my car as much as it has only 2 seats OR
Buy an old 911.
I'd like to hear thoughts on people who've owned both!
Thanks

An old 911 cannot be run on a shoestring and like any old perf car will unexpectedly throw up huge bills.
Also depending on which model the performance won't be much better than your 981.
Much as ai prefer 911s to Caysters in your shoes I would definitely keep the 981 and your daughter can sit in the passenger seat which no doubt she will love.

Cant help with owning & comparing both, but from a practical/financial point of view have you looked at a 997.2?
Should be able to get something nice for under 40 grand with PDK.
Although with Spring coming looks like prices are firming up.
Switched from an F80 M3 last year & was surprised just how practical (and fun) the 911 turned out to be.

Apologies before I start, I've never owned a Porsche....
My future SIL has a Cayman on order due to be ready for delivery in August. A 911 has been on my 'list' ever since I saw Steve McQueen driving one in the opening shots of 'Le Mans' Oh, and I have driven a couple
Still, never owned one, but thought i'd throw two penneth in, which is, have you driven a 911 of the age/model that will be in your price bracket? I've always believed in 'try before you buy' and I'd definitely want to try an example of what you might be giving the Cayman up for before making a decision....
Good luck and congrats on the new baby........

Having a child will change your life alot. Personally, I wouldn't be piling money into a sports car that will double your monthly when you already have a car you love.
Getting kids out of any 2 door car just becomes a pain after a while. Child vomit in the back of a nice car isn't much fun either...
Maybe keep the money aside to make the daily car as much fun as you can with four doors. I'm sure the Clubman is good fun for starters.
The Cayman may get used less often but you'll enjoy it more when you do.

Nice problem to have, but as has been said above, I wouldn't do anything right now.
Up until Nov I had a Macan which was perfect for the small family we had - two adults and 8yr old daughter. I also considered a 911 might work with small child and an X1 as the second car.
Fast forward a bit and we now have a 5month old son and the Macan has gone in favour of a Cayenne, given the limited space in the Macan for baby clobber and all the sh 1 te you maybe don't need to carry around, but want to. Even the X1 looks a bit tight once you stick the buggy in the boot. And believe me, you won't get a baby seat in the back of a 911 - for the first year it'll have to go on the front pax seat so good luck with getting the missus to sit in the back of the 911.
If I were you, I'd carry on enjoying the 981 and then see how life takes you with the little one.
Even my other half hadn't appreciated the issue we'd have with the Macan until it actually happened and we changed to the Cayenne; she just thought it was my way of justifying (another) change of car.
NB: she's my daughter's step-mother so it was all new to her with babies.

Jeez all that sounds awful above 😄
I’m in the same boat but not the imperative to change. Sell the Cayman and buy potentially a C4S 996 or 40AE.
I’ve gone over and over on it but the Cayman is so good and I’ve owned it from 14k miles so it’s really a known quantity to me. So thinking with my head I’ll stick with the Cayman.
Hearing your circumstances, I think I’d do the same in your shoes as well. We’ve been blessed with the 981 and I don’t expect it to be such an easy ownership proposition with an older 911.

I'm about to put my fully loaded 981CS on sale at RPM Technik, all due to a recent puppy arrival! Owned it for almost 6 years, 5 euro tours and many other great drives.
Will going back to probably a 996C2 (car prior to the 981 was a 996T), which will free some cash towards changing another of our cars.
Really enjoyed the PDK, and would have another. Will be quite happy with the performance, and expect it to be similar to the 981. I'll be looking to add PCCM+, ensure the IMS has/will be done, and may well look at a suspension refresh if required.

I would stay as you are for now, big change is coming.
But don’t get rid and go all estatey.
I bought my 911 when my son was 9 months old, and as a family we had a ball. On his 3rd birthday we camped at Le Man in the 911. And yes my wife has been in the back in later years between Calais and Zebrugger. Never again though.
I appreciate you can’t all fit in the Caymen, but you can combine the car with being a dad.

I would keep the Cayman. If you’re starting a family then you’ll need something big for the pram and all the stuff that goes with a baby. Get an estate for family trips and daily driving and keep the Cayman for pleasure. When my first child came along I was astonished at how much stuff is needed. Weekend trips away or UK holidays require a car with a lot of space.
Also, for what it’s worth, I had a Boxster 987S for a while and sold it to scratch the 911 itch. I was so disappointed. The Boxster was a much more fun driver’s car. In the end I bought a 911 Turbo (which I still have) but recently bought another Boxster. If I had to chose the best weekend toy in which to have fun I’d take the Boxster.

I had a 996 c2 for 3 or 4 years when my girls were little, then traded for a PDK base 981.
For what it’s worth, I regret it and plan to go back to a 911. Both were great cars in their own way. The 911 felt like more of an event to drive, the 981 was easier to live with as a daily driver. 996 was cheaper but cost more to maintain.
It’s a cliche, but the big difference for me is those back seats. With the 911 I could take the whole family along. A lot of my love for that car is bound up in those memories. My 5 year old still talks about the time we combined a track day at Anglesey with a family beach holiday (the roof rack helps...)
I keen to make a few more of those memories before my girls get to big to fit in the back!

Better to have a car you can use and enjoy rather than something you can only take out on your own once in a while.
A 987 Spyder or Cayman R very much appealed to me, but ultimately there was no point as I rarely go anywhere on my own. Those little rear seats are very useful.
The argument that a later Cayman/Boxster will be faster than an earlier generation 911 is lost on me. I don't race other cars on the road so half a second or a few mph not important. What I do like is the way a 911 drives with the weight over the rear wheels etc. It is a unique driving experience that can be rewarding at times.
PDK was a must for me also. so I was faced with a choice from the 997.2 upwards. The earlier car is the smallest and suited what I like.
