circular breathing !!

Hi anyone know of a better way to train how to do this, as I have been trying to master this with a straw and find it very hard,

Is this where you breathe out continuously? I've heard about Sax players etc doing it to maintain notes.

Do you want to do it for a musical reason or were you just bored?

If not musical... I think your time would be best suited to learning how to breathe through your ears...

I don't know a 'better' way to train other than tighten your lips when you fill your cheeks so that less air comes out in the second it takes to breathe in through your nose.

Other than that I would suggest holding your breath for as long as you can, which will increase your lung capacity over time (or will teach you that your lungs are not really empty when your brain says they are).

Spot on. My trombone teacher told me about it. He'd been playing for years and never mastered it and knew of only a handful of pro musicians who could do it with any proficiency. My personal opinion - Life's too short. Take a breath, get a beer in, whatever...

I didg a little meself, but can't crack the circular breathing either. I think it's extra hard on a didgeridoo since your dealing with longer wavelengths and lower frequencies (which is a technical way of saying your lips flap about more )

I've got a didg - I can't circular-breath either. I've tried and got fairly close but my nose is a bit shagged and I don't think I can breath quickly enough.

I'd love to be able to though. Once I can I'm going to wrap a sheet around myself like a loin-cloth and put toothpaste dots on my face etc and go out busking.

i can do it rather well on teh didgeridoo. the trick i used was to have a slug of water then expel that from the mouth while breathing in through the nose to 'get the feel' of what it should be like. after that it was just practice!

I can do the circular breathing bit, but I find that it changes the pitch of the note you are tyring to play (on a euphonium).

I can do it on my Trombone to an extent, the problem is that the tone quality degrades while using the air from my cheeks. I guess that's less of a problem on a didj since it gives it the classic didj "wah-wah" noise. Never really found a use for it on the trombone since there's never going to be a (sensible) piece of music written that requires it, and one incredibly long note would make a pretty dull jazz solo!

Its a shame, it is a quality article, genuine bored-out-by-termite eucalyptus with Aborigine decoration. Its finding use as a makeshift light sabre at the moment (son is into Star Wars), but that's hardly doing it justice!

Try blowing using the side of your mouth rather than the middle... seriously!
