Hi All,
Perhaps a silly question, but do I need new tyres? The profile looks fine, but the crack looks a bit concerning.

I booked my first track day in May, so I wouldn’t mind smoking my existing tyres, but don’t want to endanger myself or others.

I'd be binning them ASAP.

It looks like they were made in wk19 2014 and they're clearly knackered.

Personally I’d bin them... did they pass MOT like that?

Track days aren't the place to use up old tyres....strange internet/motoring myth this is.
You car needs to be better prepared when considering a track, as you would for a very long drive/road trip.
Loadings are higher,
temps are higher,
speeds are higher,
forces are higher.

Understood, thank you!

The rear tires look a little better (made week 45 in 2016). Would those still be ok? I’m going to get a full set anyway, but I’m trying to get a better feel for what is fine and what isn’t.

That being said, is swapping the front or rear tyres only (as opposed to all4) ok or a no-go?

If they're fine you could just replace the front pair now and the rears after the track day, but if it was me I'd do all four at the same time now. The 'OK' ones are still 5 years old and if you're taking them on track I'd put safety first.

YMMV of course.

You’ll have very different grip levels form a pair of brand new front tyres and pretty well worn rear tyres....personally I’d replace them all. Depends on the car/conditions on the day and your driving I suppose but in my case I’d rather have as much help as possible from the tyres !

This tread had me wondering. Just checked my tyres and they have a 2012 date stamp but have lots of wear left. Does the date have a lifespan

Rears typically wear much faster than fronts, I reckon I change 2 pairs of rears to every pair of fronts, I’m still here wink

Thanks guys

Just ordered the Michelin Pilot Sport 4 S biggrin

For some reason I couldn't find any recommended Pilot Sport PS2s for my sizes anymore... I got the same size, load and speed rating, so I hope it'll fit eek
