I reckon there maybe won’t be that many of these around in 5-10 yrs looking at how many are in scrap yards or still in use in bad condition .ive got a T reg 1.6 one in the rarer burgundy colour in good low mileage condition.could it ever be worth any decent money ? I’m updating the alloys and getting the bodywork a1 but would someone spend 2.5 k on one like that at the moment?

How low is your low mileage ?
If it is mega low ,like less than 10K , it might be of interest to the trade sellers with the white backdrop pictures but a 1.6
is never going to be worth mega bucks , maybe a GTi or VR6 but yours ,not so much .
Not mega low but 38k auto.a guy in the local garage has had one for years and says they were the last of the proper vw’s before they all looked the same If it is mega low ,like less than 10K , it might be of interest to the trade sellers with the white backdrop pictures but a 1.6

Seriously mint GTI and V6 Mk4's will be starting to appreciate nicely.
However, 1.6 automatic Mk4's are horrible cars. I feel bad saying this about someone else pride and joy, but its a terrible car, slow wheezy engine with no torque married to an old fashioned dim witted slushbox, probably the worst combination possible. And the handling was sub par even back in the day, along with very patchy reliability.
Honestly, I say this with love, you can do so much better. Please, don't hang on to it as though its a modern classic, its not.

"Guy in the local garage " is not an expert on T reg Golfs , so don't take everything he says as gospel .
Sounds like you have a well kept 22 year old car ,just keep it well kept without spending a fortune on it as you will not get
much % of it back .
Yeah true but he must know something as vw enthusiast and been in the business all his life Sounds like you have a well kept 22 year old car ,just keep it well kept without spending a fortune on it as you will not get

planning on spending about 1k getting in A1 condition with new wheels car would then owe 2.5 but there are few like that on eBay etc

As an example,

Mk5 DSG 1.4TSI
Will beat your current car, across the board, on every single metric, better to drive, better gearbox, better economy, better performance, quieter and smoother.

Over a long enough period, it'll probably be worth at least something to the right person, but I wouldn't go expecting it to be a fortune. With cars, you're generally better to own them because you like them, and not worry about whether they're some kind of investment.

If I was changing I’d maybe go for the omega ,golfy perfectly capable on motorway runs I’d disagree with what was suggested it’s a fine daily runner .
