Age old question, right? I’m 24 and have had all sorts in my 5yrs riding (speed triple, SV650, Z1000SX, Duke 390, Tenere, etc). Currently on a Duke 790. Good bike but leaving me a bit cold - both in terms of wind blast and the general bike.

I’m young so doesn’t have to be a tourer, but I’m 6’1 (I know I’m not a giant or owt) and want something a bit roomier.

Anything out for sub 8k that won’t be crippling? I commute a bit 15 mile round trip and do usually 1.5hr rides on a weekend. 1 large trip a year (2019 was Picos De Europa for example).

I like a 2011 Fireblade or a S1000RR but open to anything. Just want to try sports bikes out for a bike.

I personally find the S1000RR the most comfortable for litre super bikes at 5’11 but your budget means you’d be limited for choice.

I’ve always loved the Yamaha R1 but the ergonomics just don’t work for me, which is a real shame as it’s an amazing bike.

Yeah. We’re pretty much the same height so that mirrors what I was expecting. Agreed that my budget might limit me somewhat which is a shame.

How’s the general ride on the S1K? Outside of flogging it down a B road? In the town, slower speeds, rougher road etc.

I own a S1000RR (2017) and it’s as good as it possibly could be especially with heated grips, cruise control (early bikes didn’t get this stuff for info). I commute on mine 3 days (although not at the moment due to COVID) a week with a round trip of 50 miles and it does everything brilliantly for a litre superbike.

I did wonder if you maybe better on the S1000R which still has (165bhp) which is a lot more power than is usable on the road anyway.

I’m 5’10” and found a first gen S1000RR really comfortable.

Tank of fuel, fill up and go again comfortable. Only thing I found was the screen was a bit low but I think a better helmet would have helped and if not an aftermarket screen is no big deal.

Try a suzuki gsxs1000F.

Good fast package at a great price. Sporty but with a more relaxed riding position.

I found my 2018 s1000rr was great. Long reach over the tank so didn't feel like there was a load of weight through my wrists.

Felt like you were in the bike rather than on it like the ducati v4 which I didn't get on with at all.

I had high screen and weights on the bars to stop the vibration giving me numb hands but with those cheap mods it was spot on.

If your commute is through town, I'd think about something more sit up though. For me, sportsbikes just put you in the wrong position for town riding. If it's more rural, fill yer boots.

Thanks. The ‘17 is a very nice bike but probably out of budget.

I have considered the R, but I’ve had so many nakeds over the last 5yrs I want to try a sports bike out

Would you be better with something like a Africa Twin? I know youd prefer a sports bike, but they can still pick there skirt up and go when you want them to.

If you want to compare riding positions this is a great site, especially if you have a reference bike that you know is comfortable to compare with

http://cycle-ergo.com/

The variations in riding position can be surprising between bikes that you may think are quite similar e.g. nakeds and cruisers

A few less degrees forward lean or less cramped hip/knee angles can make all the difference, particularly if you are over "average" height.

Honda CBF-1000 is under your budget.

You can have seats reupholstered for about £150 is they are too hard or not high enough. If you raise the seat, you may need bar risers for the same sitting angle.

S1000XR? Most of the S1000RR ummph with adv style upright riding position. Some early ones are supposedly a bit vibey in the bars, I've got a 2020 gen 2 version and its fine for vibes .

54, 6’1”... I’m surprised the SX isn’t good for you. I’m on a ‘70’ Z1000 naked with tall clock screen. It’s a Kwacka. ‘Meter Cover’ and keeps the upright riding position wind-comfortable below three figures. Puig aftermarket screens look good too, though some are challenging to the eyes! Fantastic riding position for most roads too. Love this bike!

My last 4 bikes have been, a first gen S1000RR followed by a RSV4 Factory, Panigale V4 and now an R1M, out of all of them I’d say the BMW was the most comfortable and most able to do a full day on, the Aprilia actually wasn’t too bad, the Ducati isn’t good and made even worse by the insane amount of heat it kicked out, the R1 isn’t particularly comfortable either but I can forgive it because it’s such a great bike to ride and is going to end up as a track bike.

I’ve a 2017 R1 and a 1999 4XV and I’m 6’2” and I’m fine on both although the new one has a very hard seat. Agonising. The old one though is just so comfortable and plush it’s astonishing. Very comfy bike.

I’ve a 34” inside leg, Mrs DS is also 6’2 with a whopping 37” inside leg and the old one is “hers” and she has no bother.

Yeah, another lanky here and I'm very much looking at GSX-S1000F for next bike. Roomy, comfortable ergonomics, but still very quick.

I had a tenere which was fun enough and great long distance but I just don’t like the feel of a 19” front wheel. I’d love an AT as a 2nd bike though
