Afternoon, after almost a year of trouble free motoring in my 630, today I was greeted with the Engine light illuminated.

Some background:
For months I’ve been ignoring the Irregular Battery Discharge message. The car always started and this battery message and clock reset only occurred if the car was not moved for 3 or 4 days or if I only did short trips. Once I had completed some 80 mile work commutes the message would go and all was good. I assume the long trips charged the battery enough.

Today the clock had reset and I had the yellow message with a car on the ramp and the battery discharge message. But it had the additional EML today that refuses to go off. I’ve plugged in my normal OBD scanner which I believe isn’t enough to really read the BMW messages but I did get a few errors returned regarding an open circuit. Car drives fine, no limp mode etc

Could they be related in the fact that the battery is now so poor that it’s causing other errors elsewhere in the car? Typical it’s MOT next month and will fail with this light on. Tempted to go for a long drive to charge the battery again and see if the EML goes off....

Cheers

Could just be the battery; stick a multimeter on it and see what voltages you get when engine is off and when idling and then when the cars gone to sleep

However, get the codes read properly (INSTA or Carly for BMW at a minimum) and see what might be stored in the cache

If you’re battery’s discharging that much, that the clock is resetting, I’d be addressing that issue first biggrin

Given the faff with the battery, is there a reason you just haven't bought a new one? confused

Yes, low battery issues can cause various (seemingly unrelated) error codes.

Out of interest, what is the spec of the battery currently fitted to your 630? Just checked mine and it is 95Ah and 800CCA.

Managed to clear the engine light with a BMW code reader from Amazon.... no idea what it was related to. The reader gave loads of errors from the sat nav to gear switch to adaptive lights (which I don’t have). Cleared the lot and the light went off. I’ll see if it comes back.

As for the battery.... just me being lazy. A fault that comes and goes in a car I wasn’t using that much. The green light on the battery in the boot says it’s charging and healthy but that’s obviously only part of the circuits I guess. Looks like you have a stronger battery than my one

I’ll replace the battery soon

IMO it needs a new battery...

Fit the biggest you can and get it coded to the car smile

It doesn't need to be an AGM battery IIRC; so a Yuasa or Bosch 019 style battery will be more than enough

But it does need to be coded to the car

Agree, biggest battery definitely a good idea. Lots of electrical systems on the 6 and battery grumbles can cause random issues.

Mine is an Exide iirc.

Can Carly do battery coding?

Yup; but for some reason, not on the E6x range IIRC. Know it wouldn't do it for my E65

Thanks for the hints for the battery. I’ve also just discovered there is a recall for my car for the battery cable! The MOT web page says it’s outstanding and I have no evidence of it being completed..... I’ll head to a dealer when I can

Anti corrosion terminal spray.

From the factory? I've never seen anything like that before.

Used to be added at service by BMW main dealers. It is made by Wurth.

Carly did it on mine (2004 E63 645)

When the starter motor earth went on mine I got all sorts of code errors caused by the low battery voltage. I would definitely get the battery changed and I would get the charging and starting circuit checked over.

Ha odd; they stated they don't cover the E6x range to me, but wonder if that's LCi? Mine was a late 06

Battery coding is a bolt on extra with Carly

Must be a new addition. Wasn't available when I had my E65 in 2018/2019. Carly confirmed that
