People that wont shut up

Is anyone else plagued by people that wont leave them alone, I've got a mate and he has started ringing me more and more and just talks absolute s
te, he's on the phone right now as I type this, must be 3 or 4 hours now, I want to go bed, I've got work in the morning. I've just got him on in the background like a st radio station.
What the fk can I do to make it stop. I thought I would have to move a couple years ago due to a neighbour constantly mithering me but his wife seems to have kicked him out recently so that that one solved. But I might have to do go through with it anyway now.

You could ring him and say something like “I have 30 mins until dinner is ready”. Then enjoy talking to him for 30 mins then the fictional dinner will be ready and you will have to hang up. That way you both get a chat, and you don’t get held up for ages.

He's gone, call log says call started at 19:38, finished at 23:27. He rang this morning as well and was on for 22 minutes, luckily ASDA turned up and I had to go. I know I might sound selfish and he might be struggling with the lockdown and all that but I detest talking to people, I haven't got anything to say, looking at my call log the last personal call I made and not work related was on the 28th March.
Why can't people see the obvious surely just getting the odd reply of yea or mmm in 4 hours would tell you that you are pissing in the wind.

Both might do the job of stopping the person phoning again once they've read those

This isn't a one of either, he has done it on a few occasions just recently, mostly going on about what had happened 20 years ago, its like all our yesterdays on repeat. Maybe he is depressed, maybe he is just pissed or maybe he gets a kick out of being annoying but whatever I can't imagine why the penny hasn't dropped that I'm not the one to sort it out for him, maybe I'm the only one who still answers the phone to him.
Its all well and good people just say hang up or make your excuses but its easier said than done, you basically have to tell them they are boring the arse of you and thats a hard thing to do. Its totally the opposite with my business partner who I spend a lot of time with, he gets it. We can be driving in the van somewhere and he will start going on about his remodelling of his garden or something like that and after a while he can say to me "your not really interested are you" and I can cay not really, its called being intuitive.
I've been in similar situations in the past with people who won't shut up and the common trait is its all seems to be about them, thats what make them so boring, if someone was to go on about remodelling their garden for 10 or15 minuets and then said right tell me about the inner workings of a turbo charger or what a PCI express slot is then the conversation would go on longer but ironically they don't want to be bored by something they have no interest in but want the conversation to carry on.
It sounds like your mate is struggling.
Has he got a wife/kids or does he live on his own?
Kudos for putting up with him if it’s frequent but the simplest remedy is not to answer his calls every time.
Limit contact to a couple of times a week. If he asks why you don’t pick up just say you’re studying for the Open University and need peace ( or another similar excuse)
If you use the above excuse you can schedule him to certain (infrequent) times.

And I don't have any friends I'd be talking to on the phone for 4 hours!!Likewise, id have no issue telling a genuine mate that he was taking the piss wasting 4 hours of my day on the phone.,I get annoyed when the wife is gossiping to her mates for more than 20 minutes.
