Hi, I've a new work laptop and I'm trying to connect it to my monitors at home. I've a HDMI lead on one monitor so that's fine but the other lead has a USB-C but the laptop doesn't have a USB-C port - what's the best way to connect this to the second external monitor?

Thanks

EDIT - sorry, it's a display port adapter and not USB-C.

Depends what other outputs you have?

There are plenty of usb to hdmi adaptors on Amazon, not sure if they’ll run 4k though.

Edit, this claims 4k from usb3 - https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00NQCFXGA/ref=cm_sw_r... via

Thanks, wasn't looking to spend much on it as I thought it would just be an adapter for a couple of quid. Might just look at a proper docking station in that case.

I've gone through my Amazon history and this is the cable that I bought last time and it worked fine. My new laptop doesn't have the USB-C port so I just need something like this https://www.amazon.co.uk/Syntech-Compatible-Charge... or would this not work for a monitor set up? Apologies, I'm completely out of my depth here hehe

Will a USB port output a video signal? I didn't think that it could.

With only a single HDMI port, you might need to look at daisy chaining the two monitors so that they both work from the single port.

USB can be made to drive a monitor using a technology called Displaylink. It's rather less performant than a proper display connection, but especially with USB 3 is generally good enough for Office type applications, rather less so for gaming.

You can often daisy chain DisplayPort monitors, rather less often with HDMI

Your options are fairly limited if you're looking for 4k display support, USB3 connectivity and being cheap as the cheaper USB3 docks only support up to 1080p displays.

Your starting option is something like this:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/StarTech-com-Laptop-Doc...

which will connect to one of your USB ports and then the dock provides you with that additional display connection. Then you'll be using HDMI + Dock Displayport into your two monitors. It'll be running using displaylink technology so don't expect video and high frame rates to be as performant as your normal HDMI connection but for general office usage it'll be fine.

Thanks, bit of a bugger that as I thought it was going to be uber cheap to sort. I’m not fussed about 4K resolution etc, just something half decent to stick my emails on. Thanks thumbup

I suspect a dock is going to be the best option.
