PCP - Voluntary termination - damage guidelines

I’m VT’ing my Audi Q5, but there are scratches on the rear bumper when the dogs jump out of the boot on occasions!

Does anyone have any guidance on whether this would be a chargeable damage?

That looks like more than what they would class as wear and tear, especially if it's like that all along the top of the bumper.

Unreasonable according to their guide but doesn’t mention costs. Your paperwork may be more specific. Some packs come with a cardboard ruler and cut-out with price guide.

This OP. If it catches the nail then it won’t polish. Depending on their charges per scratch etc. it may be cheaper to arrange a quality smart repair out of pocket.

Run your finger nail across the scratches. If your nail catches then the scratches have probably gone through the clear coat. If not then they’ll polish out. Do you know anyone with a machine polisher?

Thanks. Nail doesn’t feel the scratches, but I think I’ll get a smart repair place to have a look.

Throw a couple of coats of blue turtlewax colour magic on it then see if it stands out, the filler in it should get rid of most of them.
Hard to gauge the depth of some of the scratches from the pic.

just wait till they inspect it and they'll either ignore it or tell you what the charge will be. Why pay for it if you don't need to?

I would assume because you don't have a choice once its inspected. At least now he can choose to do something about it. If the inspector comes out and decides the scratches need fixing, he will be stuck with the charge and not be able to get it sorted himself.

Looking at the photo, its not easy to see how bad they all are but I would be surprised if you can polish those all out to a point where they are not visible and charges for scratches tend to be on length so 'scratches above 25mm' or similar depending on the guidelines.

You have nothing to lose by getting a mate to give it a few passes with a machine polisher but if you do leave the boot like that, I am fairly confident it will result in a charge. That is not wear and tear as far as I am concerned, I certainly wouldn't buy a car like that and think 'Oh, its ok the owner had dogs so that's just wear and tear'.

We have a dog and even making sure I roll an old towel over the boot/bumper each time she gets in and out, there are still a few marks.

Hide but not remove I'd say looking at them looks to be down and part way through the coloure by the looks of the photo

Be careful as if they don’t like the smart repair you’ll get billed anyway.

a quick machine polished would remove 95% of that but I reckon its then 50/50 whether they'll mark it down or not.

A decent body repair guy would repaint that for £150 max.

I got the bonnet, tailgate, bottom of driver's door and a small rust patch repaired on the wheel arch of my E36 Touring all done for £400.

Thanks all. I’m going to borrow a Dewalt polisher from a neighbour and give that a go. May also try the turtle wax suggestion further up the post.

I agree that you either pay up front and do it yourself, or pay VWFS to do the work. But I want to at least try to make it look a bit better.

I've just gone through this with Alphabet on my Volvo XC60. It had a proper dent and scratch from a car hitting me. I had bodyshop repair quotes of about £300+

Guy that came to assess and collect found a lot more scratches, little things and also all four wheels were kerbed (I knew 2 would definitely be worth doing). He put in his report at over £1k worth or damage. Alphabet came back with a cost of £323 which I was more than happy with. Then looked at the details and they were only charging £84 for the door repair and 3 wheels at £80 (still much cheaper than me getting it done).

Oh and having just had my old mota detailed by my friend (https://www.facebook.com/buffdaddydetail those in the detailing world/classic Mini will know Paul well) his advice to me when I suggested I maybe get a polisher is, you can do more harm than good without proper training.
