V8 Vantage intermittent dipped beam

2007 V8V with HIDs
Driver's side headlamp has dropped out a couple of times, get the warning on the dash too. Currently working but wondering what to look at replacing.
Bulb, ballast or both?
Osram DS1 bulbs about £28 each and ballast (Ford part) can be had for about £35 so not an expensive job really.
Is it likely to be the ballast? Can't see a bulb being intermittent ?
