anybody know and cheepish diy install trackers seen plenty of cheep tat on ebay but is there any people have used?

If you have an iPhone you can purchase a second hand, hide it in the car and use find my iPhone or find friends. Wire up a charger on a permanent live which will keep the phone fully charged.

i want something that would work right so a i phones defently out of the question nor are they cheep

Any old phone will work. All trackers utilize the same technology.
