Saving a DVD...

Get a free piece of software call DVDShrink.
It can either just rip the data of the DVD onto your hard drive, or it can re-compress the data to make it fit on a blank DVD-R - without any signficiant reduction in image quality (as far as I can see).
It will also let you re-author a disc to extract just those parts you want (e.g. just the movie without the menus or special features, for example), allowing a further saving in disc space consumed.
It's the simplest all-in-one solution I've come across.

Theres a piece of software called DVX that i have recently started playing with to rip my DVD's to avi format for when i get a movie player. Its one of the easier ones i tested as you install it and then go into the program and it tells you what components you need to do certain functions then gives you the option to download and install them automatically. A lot of others you have to do this manually and have about 3 programs open at the same time - grief !
Haven't perfected it yet in terms of quality/filesize (looking to get a film to about 700mb) but initial ripping of Minority Report looks promising. So far the ripping/compressing process takes about 6 hours a dvd- dont know if thats bad or not.
Its just going to take time methinks

I recently got a DVD burner as well so this is interesting. There's a ridiculous amount of info about on how to go about all this but, TBH, I can't be arsed reading it.
I'm OK with burning download ISO's and VOB's etc but how do I go about 'backing up' a retail copywrighted DVD in such a way as to preserve all the menu's and (v important) the DD/DTS soundtrack??

Kinda just answered my own question.

That looks like it'd do it without having to piss about with umpteen different programs.

With things like DVD shrink, DVDclone, what happens to the sound? Is the DD or DTS or whatever track preserved?
With DVD Shrink you are able to choose which soundtracks you wish to keep. The more soundtracks (DTS, DD, French, German etc) you keep in your *cough* archived *cough* copy the more you take a hit on the quality of the film. The soundtrack quality is not affected, only picture.
