I keep hearing on news bulletins that the PM is going to intervene with changes to some football stuff. If some men that kick footballs about wish to kick them about with a different set of chums from normal what does it have to do with the government ? I have no understanding of the footballists or their game but really what does it matter if they choose to play ball in a different place to normal.

Elite football contributes around £!0 Billion to the UK Economy each year, so the prospect of a chunk of that revenue disappearing would be of concern to government, I reckon.

Let's do a personality check

Do you wear a bow tie in daylight ?

Often consider yourself intellectually superior to others ?

Ony participate in individual sports, like wking or mountain biking ?

Had the ITV button removed from your remote control

Live in a pebbled dashed semi in Corby but have the house named 'Winterfell'

All down to money I'm afraid! Create a 'super', non inclusive, league. Losing interest in football due to the clubs being predominantly run by money men. This idea has the potential to ruin football for the average fan! frown

Football is the most watched and most participated in team sport in the UK. The ground swell of opinion of the man in the street so far is THIS SUPER LEAGUE IS AN OUTRAGE. Why in the name of bks would you think the politicians wouldn’t want to stick their oars in?

I doubt that Boris has the faintest interest in football as such, although I may be wrong. However what Boris is very interested in is being popular. This is standard Boris operating procedure. Detect something people are annoyed about, and go public with a "yes, we in government are with you, folks, we've got your back" or something. Then wait to see what the focus groups and private polling says.
If it later transpires that most people think a European Super League is a great idea, Boris will be promising full government support. Have we ever had a PM with fewer principles?

I'm another one who doesn't get it.

We have some clubs which are more about business than football. That's fine. If fans don't like it, then why don't they support a club that is more to their liking?

Arsenal is just a global shirt flogging brand, the football is incidental.

As ever follow the money. These clubs have realised that the average UK football "enthusiast" contributes naff all to their bottom line. Young master Wong in Beijing spends a lot more. So be it - and the next generation of clubs can grow with the support of genuine fans.

Not sure young master wong has a season ticket or goes to the games though does he.

Also league games would still be played as I understand it this is an alternative to the European Cup rather than a replacement for the legaue. But if 20 top flight euro teams joined then maybe you would see Aresnal playing in the UK less.

Politics is a game of two 'alves and in this half, Boris is riding to the rescue on his polo pony.

Football is the game of "the workin' man"

Boris saves football for "the workin' man"

Vote Tory. We are saving the footy. Just for you.

yes people travel all over the country every weekend to watch matches, plus TV revenue. And the English Premier League is a hugely successful export product shown all over the world.

But, Super League = more money which is more money to pay players who then pay more income tax, more money for the clubs who pay more tax, negating the loss in other income (potentially). Unless of course the clubs move to another country, in which case, it's not Liverpool, Man City or Man Utd is it.

If most people are in favour of it, then why shouldn’t the government support it? Isn’t that their job, enacting the will of the people and all that?

It's more the effects on grass roots sport that (hopefully) they're concerned about.

No, young master Wong doesn't buy a season ticket, but there are a vast number like him.
