Nice and gentle, I'm sure it will scrub up again.

Not a bad ditching. fking lucky no one in the sea was hurt, it seemed to come pretty bloody close to a couple.

Would salt water corrosion be an issue on the structure ?

Not if it washed off reasonably soon, no.

That said the sand and water getting into the engine will not have been very good for it, even if it is washed off quickly.

I imagine the restoration company will be scrubbing it up for free if engine failed straight out if their restoration.

Nah, miles away. We all drive a lot closer than that to pedestrians, but never hit any.

I'm no expert, but that looked like an impressively neat job to me!

I've heard that he might be in a spot of trouble with the FAA over the ditching given the proximity to people in the water, and nearly landing on at least one swimmer......plus he wasn't wearing a life preserver for an over the water display, and from photos taken from their B-25 way before the display started, a long smoke trail can clearly be seen coming from the engine of the Avenger, so questions are being asked as to why this wasn't communicated to the Avenger pilot, so as to make a divert into either of the close by divert airstrips (Cape Canaveral and Patrick AFB) for the airshow, and if it was, why did he choose to continue the display?

What possibility of even seeing a swimmer when struggling with a dying a/c and flared for ditching?

In trouble for not wearing a lifejacket indeed! Make him write out 'I must wear a lifejacket' 100 times.

Depends on the height, surely, but from the video it is clear there are people in the water and he did nothing obvious to head out to sea away from the beach. By the looks of things the fact he didnt hit anyone was more luck than judgement. Another 50m in any direction and the result might have been different.

Ref the lifejacket - isn't that standard procedure flying WW2 aircraft over water? Especially if also doing a display?

My buddy recently sank his boat (fool). It was underwater for about an hour. That was enough!

The reference from those that know, is that he risked public safety by ditching so close to the beach, because he wasn't wearing a lift jacket (as I believe the rules state) and thus would have been at greater personal risk by ditching further out away from the public.....which is what would have been expected.
And also failed to adhere to ditching SOP's by not opening the canopy prior to hitting the water, which given the fairly recent death of a P-47D pilot because of that very thing, is why a certain amount of fan driven muck maybe heading his way from the FAA.

Other than that, it was a textbook ditching it seems.

It's a pity that wasn't a deserted beach...as that may have resulted in a fairy-tale ending.

Right at the limits of a stall and manages to avoid the swimmers where it looks like he wanted to put down - very well executed.

I must admit I thought the same, if it were in a different place. Could have been a disaster just there.

Love the way that the swimmers watching, made no effort to get out of the way.

All of them, very odd.
