3 mobile - what are they like?

My current contract with Orange is due to run out on the 22nd and I was looking at a deal currently in CPW for 3 mobile;
Free Nokia 6680 handset
500 mins x-network
100 texts
half price line rental for 9 mths (usual price £30)
Does anyone have any views on both the network or the handset? I don't want to sign myself in for a 12 mth contract only to find their reception or the phone are cr*p.

Personally I would never got with them for two reasons:
1 - Their advertising insults the intelligence of a gnat.
2 - Their financial situation is far from secure - given that they have spent about a billion on a video mobile service no-one wants, and are now desperately discounting to try and get more customers.

I have been with 3 since January. Apart from the fact the handset they supplied me was completely shit (the LG 8120i) and I had to have it replaced 5 times in 3 months (I'm ok now, have a fab Motorola one ), I have had NO issues with 3 at all. They are cheap, the coverage is completely fine (even in deepest darkest Cornwall, at my parents in the sticks in Wiltshire) and anywhere in between. You can't get 3G everywhere, obviously, but 2G is no issue. The only thing that 3G does which 2G doesn't is do video calls, which I personally haven't used much anyway...
I would recommend them.
Even tho the handset issue was a tad naff, the customer service was always very good, and prompt and the customer service advisers helpful and friendly. Which is important

Is it right that their network switches over to O2 when their own coverage drops? If so then wouldn't this counter any coverage issues?
It's not 3g specifically I'm after, just that the deals are so very tempting - but likely for a reason.

I have 3 and on the whole it is pretty good, sometimes get messages thru late because the signal in the house is low, but in France the signal was better than I ever got with orange. Prices are great too, got a brill deal on a motorola A1000 recently.If you are going to kimbolton on Sunday I can give you more info.

Their customer service is utterly awful - equally as bad as NTL. Coverage for the 3 signal is a bit crap, if it were utterly crap, or you could switch it to just use the 2G O2 signal and not even look for a 3g signal it would be fine, but as it can just about get a 3G signal it goes with that and you get crap call quality and constantly dropping calls.
Avoid at all costs.
