Daily Mail owner sues Google over search results

The owner of the Daily Mail newspaper and MailOnline website is suing Google over allegations the search engine manipulates search results.
Associated Newspapers accuses Google of having too much control over online advertising and of downgrading links to its stories, favouring other outlets.
It alleges Google "punishes" publishers in its rankings if they don't sell enough advertising space in its marketplace.
Google called the claims "meritless".

Will be interesting to see how this pans out.
That’s how google works.
Search for ‘solicitor’ and the ones who’ve bunged somebody some money to appear on page one of the search results comes up first. Theoretically the best solicitors won’t need to spend anything on search ranking because they’re getting all their work from word of mouth and happy customers.
Surely the Mails quality journalism will shine through? A well regarded newspaper producing things people want to read would not have to worry about google ranking...

Why’s it insidious? It’s a search engine run by a business not a public service isn’t it? There’s all kinds of different algorithms going on to influence the results we get on different search engines. Let's hope it snowballs...
Is this like people complaining about (another business) YouTube or Twitter etc banning stuff? Again why on earth do people expect to use a free service on someone’s business and it not be run the way that business wants?
Seems a bit entitled to me that people now expect google and YouTube and Twitter etc to be doing things the way they want when quite frankly it’s entirely up to google and YouTube etc how they run their services and entirely up to us if we want to make use of them or not.

Mail online is one of the largest in the world. They couldn't get to that level without "producing things people want to read".What makes the Mail think they can decide what news to report or what slant to put on it?

Agreed, most portals like Yahoo for example are 95% made up of stories from left wing links like Huff Post and the Guardian. CA bigtech is basically filtering news to fits its WOKE agenda. Look at the way they promote non stop Biden positive stories yet did the opposite with Trump.Let's hope it snowballs...

Because they're not just another search engine anymore. They ARE the Internet. They have almost complete control. Is this like people complaining about (another business) YouTube or Twitter etc banning stuff? Again why on earth do people expect to use a free service on someone’s business and it not be run the way that business wants?

I would agreed with you about the private company stuff, if this was 15 - 20 years ago but we have to look at the current situation and conclude logically, that given the massive global reach and power the Internet has allowed companies to accrue, existing legislation is no longer appropriate.
Big tech are insidious because they repeatedly tell everyone they're playing it straight, when they do anything but that and they manipulate absolutely everything. They literally control the flow of data (in many forms) throughout the world.
They have too much power, they don’t use it in a neutral way and are not subject to the moral and ethical restrictions that governments are.
