I've been WFH since March 2020 and the VPN into work has been OK til the last few 2 weeks when it keeps dropping out, I'm on WiFi 1 floor up and 1 room across from the Router, it never has a problem with TV or webpages, just the VPN, I guess that's because it drops out when there's a slight loss of connection but everything else carries on as long as it comes back quickly??

I'm running an Internet Connection Monitor which shows it always connected.

1 option is to get a cable put in from the router to the office - that's the most work & most hassle.

Does anyone have any easy solutions, is it worth having a booster at the router or a "bigger aerial" at the laptop?

It's a problem here as well, so it may be world wide.
I use the VPN, then suddenly it just stops, change to a different location and it's fine; for a while.
I'm also getting a lot of sites blocking me because the IP of the VPN servers is well known and logged as such.
So many people want privacy I suppose.

Can you be sure it’s your end if it has only just started happening, it could well be an issue with the work network or vpn.

Can you run a long network cable to the router temporally to prove if the issue is wifi related?

You're correct, VPNs tend to notice connection glitches more than web pages and streaming video. Cue endless arguments with people that their internet connection is fine, why does your VPN drop?

packetlosstest.com may be worth experimenting with to see if you get any insight into how stable the connection is.

An intermediate step that may be worth trying is a set of powerline adapters to give you an effectively wired connection between the router and the office. They work best on reasonably modern mains wiring - don't try them if you still have rubber insulation.

Thanks.

Quick trip up to Argos for Powerline adaptors smile

Working in the office tomorrow so will find out on Friday if it's solved the problem.
