I suspect it's just Autocar playing with Photoshop. They do it all the time

Looking at the way the light eminates from outside of the headlamp lens area, I would suggest its simply a photoshop. Looking at the plates, I would suggest DBE (electric) VGT (Vantage GT). If it were to represent a DB12, I would suspect a "12" in the plate.

Recipe.

1. Take a suitable photo from the internet.
2. Use a cropper from the kitchen drawer to select part of the image.
3. Add some icing from a piper to cover the car's front grille.
4. Garnish over the number plate.
5. Heat very gently in the low heat oven, until you can dream up a story to go with your new picture.
6. Publish and see if anyone believes you.

The moral here - don't use a photo that people might remember. wink

To be fair to Autocar, they don't exactly keep it a secret that it's their own image. The piece was published in 7th April edition of the mag.

Are they saying the original image is their own photograph ?

The bigger question is that from a styling perspective, a BEV doesn't require an open grille at all - heat management is different, and they create excess drag which harms range, hence why so many EV's have solid front ends currently (the Autocar render depicts what seems a sensible approach to retaining the design language while adopting a new way of producing propulsion).

I shudder to think what the fallout will be if the first Aston EV doesn't have a traditional grille though. Something like this, possibly:

I'm quite excited about the next batch of cars though, particularly with the battery tech from Mercedes which is quickly becoming very competitive. In 2 years time, the last internal combustion engine (with hybrid help) cars will start to be produced at Gaydon and St Athan, It might be better to enjoy what's on offer, while it's available, because the clock is ticking, and the motor car as we know is firmly in the sights of the lobbyists who demonize it, and they wont stop until it's been eradicated.

The way in which governments have gone after cars and the language used it's as if they're as dangerous as assault rifles. We all know that these cars don't cover enough miles to cause the pollution they're accused of, but the automotive industry is a soft target and it's having to adapt to survive. Aston's been on the back foot and always several steps behind the competition until very recently. I wish more folks would embrace the technology partnership with Mercedes (if not the ICE element), because it's the lifeline keeping the company relevant and will become even more pivotal as other OEM's start to throw serious amounts of investment at new technology (be it batteries, interior fascias, materials and so on).

Fingers crossed a balance is struck where products can be developed that meet with the approval of those making the rules, and those who want an Aston Martin that's reminiscent of 2003 - 2016 cars (which might be impossible, but hopefully AML's given the chance to see what's possible in a very different automotive landscape).

I really hope the DB12 tag goes on a classy, last of the line, GT car with a V12 petrol engine.

Just keep selling that, even if it becomes a niche, expensive sideline, until they are no longer allowed to sell them anywhere.

Maybe use the DBE or DBS for 'normal' electric Astons and call the high performance electric car Aston Martin Voltage.

I was looking for that on the picture on their website and couldn't find it, but there was a blue "Autocar" flash on one of their other renderings. I've just checked and no credit or disclaimer in the gallery on that picture.

It might become a thing that AM continues to skip even numbers... as dumb as it is.

I can see it why they did it for the DB8 and for the DB10, but DB12 is just too perfect to skip, especially if it will be their last V12.

Agree. Surely they won't skip DB12 in favour of DB13 ? eek

Will Mr. Strulovitch want to continue the memory of Sir David Brown?

How does Aston Martin LS1 sound?

Gosh!
Imagine if that became a reality.
Just what would those awkward PHers say about that.

First the grille, the side strakes, then the DB.
What next - red trousers?
