I find myself Sat in the garden not being able to see my 11 year old laptop screen due to bright light. I think it may be the sun smile

I am under a gezebo and still can't see the screen. So does anyone have any recommendations for a laptop with a screen that will cope with bright light? It really needs to be cheap as it won't be used a lot, the complex stuff is done on my desktop. So about £300. I can see my tablet screen fine with the brightness turned up if that helps. It needs to be able to run windows as I will have need for some windows stuff.

How about a Panasonic Toughbook - they were often used outdoors.

not really £300 odd though and it really doesn't need to be rugged. Although not too bad a price.

Do you need something with a matte screen, not gloss

I tried a temporary shade screen thing and still no luck. My laptop has a matte screen, reflections aren't the issue. Really just need a bright enough screen. My old laptop is just not bright enough. I think it's failing due to age as it doesn't seem to bright indoors with the brightness set to full

Cheap and bright screen for outdoor use don't really go well together. A better solution is some kind of shade device or perhaps just get a tablet - they tend to have brighter screens as they are designed more for outdoor use. Any of the Samsung tablets would be a good candidate.

I suspect you need a top-end screen and one of the newer ones, the problem there of course is that no one puts them into cheap or old laptops.

Maybe you need to think outside the box, or inside the box as already suggested. What is it that you're doing, I mean you're clearly skiving in the garden, so is there no way you can do 90% on your tablet and put it into the Windows stuff when you're in the house? Or connect the laptop to the Tablet and use that screen?

:-)

I am retired so skiving is not really part of need for screen brightness thing. I need to think more about how I do this. I use VScode often for home automation projects alongside 3d print slicers and the occasional simple cad stuff, which means I need windows or Linux really. I am a tinkerer so i could end up doing anything really. But mostly its just internet stuff or Tv / Youtube. I have a tablet which serves the internet fine. It is really looking like a bright screen at a bargain price is quite tricky. The closest I have got so far is a refurbed acer aspire S7 but still not sure that will meet the needs.

Remote Desktop into your PC from your tablet then you can work on that?

I just got a pretty good spec Asus with a really good screen. Tried taking it outside. Useless. Couldn't see a thing.
Just not sure laptop and sunny day mix...

Gave up trying to find a decent screen at a sensible price and took some advice from here. Its a bit of compromise but it is working reasonably well.

found some 1mm polycarb, cut to size and painted black. 3d printed some clips for the screen and we have a shade. Its working and for very little cost.
