Anyone got a clutch?

Hi all, I'm in need of a clutch for my '98 4.2, the pressure plate is knackered and the friction plates are nearly worn out.

I know, so are lots of people, but does anyone know where's there's one for the asking?

One dealer told me he knew of an owner who had bought a new clutch recently and then found he didn't need it, so is now selling it for a thousand quid!

How very magnanimous. I'd prefer one at the usual price, please!

I've got an original 4.2 clutch, brought it from a mate before he sold his car. (He had it replaced with a 4.5 one, done under warranty) so it's not a new one.

I should have a 4.2 clutch in fairly good nick. I have just changed to the newer type as I had a problem with the slave cyclinder. I hope the dealer has held it for me I will let you know later today as I must book the car in for service and MOT.

why so expensive?? mine was 1400 fitted with new slave and few other bits?? clutch itself was around £600 new I think...

there was another thread about an alternative supplier
prototyping an upgraded clutch ... may be worth searching?

Had a new clutch fitted by Austec recently whilst the engine was out for something else. IIRC they charged me £425 for the clutch and a little bit for labour (as the engine was already out). Sound like I got a bargain of sorts?

Supply and demand I'd say. This nice person who bought the clutch from the indie dealer in the east of the UK then didn't use it isn't pushed in selling it, but will do for a grand.

Nice guy. Wonder if he's a PH'er?

I've sourced one in the end though, for the usual price of around 500, from Waldonway TVR in Kent.

The problem is whether the clutch change is a simple clutch replacement or needs the flywheel and bellhousing etc to match it. If you need everything then it is around the £1000 mark.

Mine must have been just a clutch, as they changed it as a precaution while the engine was out. Reckoned I had another 1000 miles or so left in the old one
