First - sorry for being such and IT numpty. I'm at the level where I don't even really know the proper words to use to explain the problem. I'll do my best.

I have around 2-3,000 of my own photos on my Dell laptop that I've loaded from 4 different camera memory cards over the last 10 years. Microsoft Photos used to keep them all for me in date order with the month/year shown and I loved it.

In the last couple of months MS Photos no longer shows them all in date order. Sometimes I get nothing and sometimes a get a couple dozen random ones from various years. But not in order. MS Photos shows "OneDrive" at the very top R/H side and I'm not sure it always did that. I've also had an email telling me that "Your OneDrive is full" and suggesting I buy more space. Might the problem be something to do with an update? Or perhaps I should just reinstall MS Photos?

2 important things. First is that I still have the 4 memory cards with all of the pictures. I've already deleted the ones that I never wanted. Second is that if I go to File Explorer it looks like I still have every photo, it's just that they are hard to find. So they are all on my laptop, it's just that MS Photos doesn't work properly.

Cheers.

I've just checked mine as I use folders for sharing holiday photos, not normally the 'Photos' option, however the latter does seem to work for me and also work on when the photo was taken/edited, not last touched/uploaded so they still appear in date order.

If you've not run out of space I'd suggest in backing up the cards else where for safety (as sods law will have a card fail while you do my next suggested step), deleting all from Onedrive then adding them all again. My suspicion is something has 'touched' all those photos resulting in an update in edit dates.

Thanks. Backing up is important since I don't want to lose the lot. Or any of them really. I might have a go at re-installing MS Photos but then I will probably lose what's currently on there.

Be really careful with OneDrive, take heed from my experience and move them elsewhere ASAP.

OneDrive photo upload on IOS does have a good way of sorting everything into folders by day/month/year, I liked that function.

So after moving all my pictures into a safe environment I had 2 years of tidy organised OneDrive uploads and then probably 15 years of photo’s that were poorly organised and duplicates etc.

I had a Google and found this software which has organised 100k+ photo’s into dated folders and I’m now syncing that across 3 usb drives for backup and uploaded the organised folder structure to my Dropbox account.

https://www.mjbpix.com/automatically-move-photos-t...

So now all my photo’s are perfectly sorted, anything new is upload to Dropbox and then manually filtered down into a sync folder every 4 weeks.

My backups and Dropbox now look like this, year, month, week, day.

Cheers. I'll look into this. I basically understand what OneDrive is since it's part of our work IT system for good reason. But why I need at at home I'm not sure. It's not by choice.

I seem to have solved my problem by giving Microsoft £79.99 for 365 Family. All my old pics have reappeared in date order. Possibly a waste of money but it's done now.

Weird that my laptop seemed to be quite happy storing all of them until a few weeks ago.

I had the monthly 365 subscription, I really liked the organisation and ease of use of OneDrive. (Hence having a ton of stuff uploaded)

I’m about 3 weeks into a battle with MS to get my data back, but hitting a brick wall at every turn. I cannot stress strongly enough about keeping your content saved elsewhere as backup for your backup.

Cheers. Photos are really the only thing on my laptop of any consequence. And I keep all of the memory cards with the unwanted photos already deleted. That way, even if my laptop goes phut and so does OneDrive I can still upload them again onto another device and am ready to go.
