Hi Folks,

i have just traded in my 640d GC for a 67 reg G30 540i Xdrive and have a few observations. Only my 2nd Bmw.

There is a very noticeble increase in build quality- both inside and outside over the 2015 6 series.
3.0 petrol straight six is incredibly smooth and quiet - a little too quiet when putting your foot down ( do they have a switchable exhaust?)
Handling - wow this thing really has great turn in. I've swapped the Pirelli run flats for MS PS4s and it got even better.
Ride - Msport suspension really never settles until at higher speeds but great cornering i guess is the trade off.
I Drive is brilliant apart from lack of Apple Car play or ability to use playlists easily. Harmon Kardon hifi is a big improvement over last car too, not as good as B&W i've had in Jags or the Mark Levinson stereo in previous Lexus.
LED headlights not as good as hoped but 10x better than the Xenon's in last car.

I've ordered a Carly adaptor to do some tuning. Anyone else done this?

Interesting...just about to do the same swap this week. Although the 6 GC was good for its time (flagship model), the last ones in 2017-18 were not updated to the spec levels that the top 5 series (like the 540) of the same age are. I guess they were holding back on updates so that the new 8 series showed a bigger jump in quality.

Glad you are positive on the 540. Now lets see about achieving the claimed 0-60 times....practice, practice, practice wink

Exhaust: Yes, it has flaps that varies according to revs, but not switchable and yes, too quiet. There is an M Performance exhaust that fixes this.
Ride: Do you have adaptive suspension? Mine had the upgraded Professional suspension with active sway bars, and it was sublime as a ride and handling
Harman Kardon is good, B&W is excellent
LED: Do you have standard LED or adaptive? The latter are excellent

My 540i has got an odd mix of specification i believe.
Standard LED,s not adaptive.
Standard suspension , not controllable.
But lots of other boxes ticked seemingly.
Got the great sport seats with no end of adjustments. Electric sunroof. Very nice leather ( better than the 6 series definitely).
Again agree that engine/exhaust noise is very muted when foot is down.

Performance is great if lacking in torque compared to 640d naturally - i'll send it to Celtic Tuning for an upgrade in due course.

I've still got some of the Msport 351 style alloys in the garage (spare set with winter tyres on for the 640D) and was going to swap them over to see if it improves ride quality, but i notice the ET/offset is for different. Probably sell those at some point with virtually new Continental winter tyres on.

I'd like to but I was under AUC and now extended warranty and the underwriter Allianz/Mondial is now very strict about any mods. While this is probably not a big deal for small claims with the local dealers' delegated authority, I really value the protection in case of major issues and at which point the chances of a deep search are quite high.
Perhaps you don't have a warranty and at which point that won't bother you though.
