I am in the market for a V10 R8 as my next car. I have decided that it will be the manual version.

As expected, manual cars are harder to find, plenty of R Tronic ones available. What sort of price premium would the manual carry, or expect to pay? It seems you can get R Tronic ones with 30k miles for the same price as manuals with 50k miles.

Any PHers want to chime in with their experience is welcome!

Thanks.

V10 manual owner here.

I think I struck lucky with mine as prices have really firmed over the last 18 months since I bought, one in a very similar spec/mileage to mine sold on Collecting Cars a few weeks back for almost £60k.

They are becoming increasingly harder to find in coupe guise, there is one on AT at the moment but it's silver with silver blades; looks clean although for me, carbon blades and interior are a must. Spyders seem to be more common and prices are lower.

I bought mine originally to keep short term and get it out of my system, however the way prices are going I think I'm going to hold onto it as certainly owes me nothing yet. I'm not sure I would have said the same if I'd have bought an R-Tronic, though.

I think I am right in saying that the R-Tronic is essentially the same single clutch robotised manual as the e-gear Lamborghini system.

S-Tronic would be the more “traditional” automatic.

So, being the owner of an e-gear Lamborghini, I would say don’t dismiss the R-Tronic as they are great fun and neck snappingly engaging both up shifting and down shifting. You have to drive them similarly to a manual though and always in Sport modes. Try to avoid driving in the “auto” setting, as this is not really the point of a robotised manual gearbox. These actions reduce how much the car slips the clutch and therefore prolongs clutch life.

Carbon Fibre serves absolutely no purpose whatsoever other than aesthetics, so if it is not dripping in the stuff, that should not deter you if you find a good car.

Many thanks Triple Six & Superleg48.

That is great to hear from a owner of a V10 manual- I will PM you if you don't mind?

To be honest I am not adverse to a single automated clutch transmission, my M6 has SMG III and I really enjoyed it if you drove it properly and not in auto... But, I have never had a high performance manual before, plus the gated metallic clack are too much to resist!
