Another what bike thread...but with a minor difference.

Everyone has their own “ideal” bike. For the riding I do it would be very light, have great handling and not be too powerful. It should also be mechanically robust and easy to maintain. Much as I love the RS250 it falls down badly on the last two points. Not to mention that they are expensive and replacement parts are getting difficult to find (or expensive if you do).

Almost perfect would be the Paton S1-R - 158kg wet, about 70 hp as Kawasaki twin from ER-6 so should also be easy to maintain and reliable. Even history of winning at the TT. Slight downsides are the price (around £30k) and not being sold in NZ (a personal import might be possible but possibly difficult).

Another alternative would be to try to build my own. Although realistically it would mainly be someone building it for me.

If I were aiming at under 150 kg wet and around 60-70 bhp, is there a bike (new or old) that would be a good starting point? Japanese 400s have the power but seem a lot heavier.

First gen SV650? Do they race Minitwins in NZ?

EDIT:
Looks like you have Pro Twins >> http://www.nzsbk.co.nz/protwin/

Should mean you can find parts. Could even start with a race bike (although I assume you have to deal with ridiculous traffic laws).

I’d be looking at a Supermono style bike. Have a Google and I’m sure you’ll find their race website and several people have them on the road.

There were a few well known frame makers (Tigcraft etc) and most use the Rotax engine although if building for the road (not within race specs) there are probably more options like KTM and similar.

Essentially build yourself a Moto3 style bike with whatever size big single engine you want. My Bimota was basically a Supermono style bike and was well under 150kg.

ETA or use a 125 Aprilia, Cagiva etc frame and do the same although that would probably need more expensive work to modify a cast alloy frame id imagine.

Wow that Pattoni is a bit on the spendy side. Ducati something might be the easiest first try at something like this. Early belt drive turned up to eleven with a 1000DS engine. There's a 350 F1 frame for sale on Australian ebay which could be your starting point!

Strangely enough I was looking at a picture of a ER6N yesterday and wondered if anyone has done "something" with one of those but retaining the frame and rear suspension as they do look a bit unusual.

But back to possible base bikes one bike which I keep thinking about is the first of the Bloor ear 900cc Triumph triples - in the form of the Sprint or Trident (I woudn't want to sacrifice a Daytona or Speed Triple). A forum member here (KTMBoy if I remember correctly) built a really nice custom based on one of them.

KTM Duke 690 from a few years ago (2015ish) would fit the bill at 70hp and 148kg with rather nice suspension and parts.

There are six on TradeMe right now, standard Dukes at $6k to $8k, Duke Rs at $11k.

Bloody brilliant bike that goes well, handles better and looks, well, distinctive.

I was thinking Duke 690.

I saw a BMW 650 single Moto-X or something a few weeks ago. Seems they're sub 150kg. They're quite rare and pricey in the UK.

Older Ducati air-cooled motor/chassis with Paton type ergos and bodywork.
Or trim down a Ducati 750/900 Supersport with carbon goodies etc

I had a similar line of thought, sub 150kg and a light yet revvy engine.

Fate intervened though as I was offered (and bought) an 848 evo rolling chassis for a few hundred quid. Plan is to put a tuned 1100 evo aircoooled motor in and cloth it in either 851 or 900ss fairings. Aiming for sub 150kg wet and 110-120bhp.

That way you could get rid of the warping plastic tanks and poor quality parts KTM apparently use in some areas on these. Steel tank and clip ons would be a good start...

Or what about a Honda CB500R with better quality cycle parts?

If the weather stays dry I’m testing a CB500R next week.

Thanks. I suppose question is whether cheaper to start with a race bike and make it road legal or other way around. I think the Kiwi solution to traffic laws is not to bother!
