Dad has a 2018 diesel Hyundai 2.5 with a dpf

He is very keen on doing 6monthly oil changes (between dealer servicing) as these engines can suffer from buildup of sludge on the oil pickup, which can be easily avoided (hopefully) by keeping on top of oil changes. I know it probably sounds daft but he has always kept to double the frequency since the 50s

The manual for the dpf engine suggests this

Which is 5w30 c2 or c3

The sticker on the engine suggests 5w30 c3 low saps

I’m guessing all c3 oil is low saps?

When looking online at stuff, there are lots of variants, I guess as long as it says 5w30 c3, I don’t need to worry about they extra numbers some oils have as they are just meeting additional standards above the 5w30 c3 standard

Below is a picture of some mannol stuff, they all say 5w30 C3, which is good, but only one says low saps, I’m guessing that’s just a listing thing, anything that says 5w30 c3 is good enough?

Don't guess things like that, if the sticker says 5w30 c3 low saps, then that is what you are looking for.

It’s all a little confusing then , the book mentions c3 but not low saps, the sticker mentions c3 low saps

One of the mannol listings mentions low saps in the title, but nowhere in the picture or description.

I am still guessing that c3 does indeed mean low saps, but I dunno

All c2 and c3 spec oils are low saps that's part of the requirement to be branded c2/c3

Thankyou all

And thanks Chris

So as long as it has c3 on the bottle I can ignore the extra specs printed there as they are for the likes of various manufacturers who stipulated extra stuff?

Just got to your local motor factors with the reg and leave it up to them to provide the correct oil and filter, best to get a decent flushing agent to put in as well

Why would you bother putting a flushing agent in a car that has always had 6 monthly oil changes ?

Cheers, I’ve never had a very good success rate, they usually seem pissed off that I’m in there and seem to advise whatever they have or want to shift. Our local garage I used to goto happily put in the wrong grade.

I prefer to do my own stuff, so if it goes wrong I only have myself to blame.

So the question I have is as long as it says c3 on the bottle I can happily ignore all the other standard number it may ALSO have?

Cheers all, learning curve for me

Yes, I think so by reading around - all the Cx oil is "low SAPS", or rather it should say "reduced SAPS", C1 is <0.5% and C2/C3 is <0.8%. The other difference is the viscosity when at high temperatures (HTHS) - i.e. when fully up to temp how thick it is - C2 and C3 are slightly thicker than C1.

Thanks, think I will go for this

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Mannol-2x5L-Premium-5w3...

£30 for 10 lites and 20% off at the mo

Guessing that’s fine as it meets the c3 spec

You might want to read this:

Just keep life simple and buy a good brand of oil that has a history in the U.K. of supplying what it says it’s supplying. It’s only a few quid more, and save hours of trawling the bowels of the internet.

We put a flushing agent in every service, regardless of time or mileage since the last. For the sake of £5-10 depending on brand it's surprising how much it helps, especially on diesels where the oil is normally blacked the second after the engine is started

Fair enough! But yes the c3 is the important part, c3 is low saps as mentioned above. If the wrong "c" grade is used it can give issues with dpf filters clogging which in the longer term creates other issues
