Road Angel !!??

Hi There!
I have been using the Road Angel and recently the 2nd Gen Road Angel for some time now in various cars. I have always had it hardwired into the ignition, that way you are not constantly using the cigarette lighter socket (which generally breaks it). I tried to use it in the Chim and for some reason I keep getting constant alerts from the thing even though there are no 'scameras' around. The engineer who fitted the cable (Impulse Car Audio, Watford) have done TVR's before and have only experienced problems on later cars like Tuscans & Tamoras.
Anyone using the new Road Angel on a Chim and how do you get on???
Incidentally if I change the unit over to my other cars ......... no problem it works fine???? HELP!!

I had similar problems with my road angel 1 in my TVR S3 and then in my Chimaera. When I spoke to Black Spot they advised the electrical interference in some cars was causing the mobile alert to go off. On the RA1 I had the option to unplug the laser alert. In the end they sent me a replacement laser alert "ball" and it was fine afterwards. I know its not that easy on the RA2 but maybe a similar issue and worth bringing up with black spot?
What type of alerts are you getting? I get lots of false laser alerts from my Road Angel 2, two this morning.
Sunlight and infra-red security sustems are my two main suspects.
Having used it in a number of vehicles I'd say that I get less false alarms in the Chimaera that when I'm driving metal cars.
I don't believe that it is electrical interference from the car. (The device is CE marked which means amongst other things that it is not suscetible to electrical interference). A more likely explanation is that the optical filters and/or electronic discrimination are not up to the job.
Ideally Blackspot will produce a free modification to fix this problem, however, I suspect that your best option will be to disable the laser alerts in the setup menu.
Please let us know what Blackspot say.

I have called Blackspot and am waiting for a call back from their technical support dept. I will await there call and see what they suggest. In answer to your question I was also getting Laser Alert false alarms (almost continuously) when I tried it in the Chim. I moved it to my other car and it worked straight away???????

Have my Road Angel 2 plugged into the cigarette lighter and no problems.
On the RA2 you can turn off the lazer alert, which could solve your problem.
I understand that it is not much good anyway as if you hear the warning you've already been clocked anyway. Also there was nowhere on the Chim that I could locate it to get a clear forward and backward "view" which is what you need for the lazer detector to work.

I had exactly the same thing with my RA1. I've always found Blackspot's customer service to be top notch, so no doubt they'll be in touch soon. Let us know how you get on.
Just had a reply from Blackspot. The problem is because the Road Angel is picking up interference from somewhere on the car which is causing the laser false alerts. There are two possible fixes (three if you count switching off the laser alert function). Firstly put some metal gauze-type material under the dash between the road angel and the electrics, which should disperse any signal that could cause interference. Or you can choose to get the seperate laser sensor which mounts to the front number plate instead. This plugs into the back of the road angel into the "Aux" socket and is used INSTEAD of the integral unit. I will try the shrouding option first and will report back on my findings!
For a quick test you might want to stick some metal gauss and/or baco foil on top of the dash. Not pretty but it may prevent you from dismantling your dash unnecessarily.

I have exactly the same problem with my New Road Angel if I use the windscreen bracket (almost constant laser alerts). If I position it on the dashboard (centrally) using the magnetic disc supplied then I no longer get this problem. I have however found a couple of times on a hot day (less adhesion) and with rapid acceleration

that the Road Angel comes unstuck and ends up on my lap.I wouldn't be surprised if the 12V supply was a bit noisy. I think its unlikely to be RFI.
Try running it off a 12V battery for a while, see if the situation improves.
You can also try checking any earthing points on the car, cleaning contacts etc. Also, another fix that I haven't got around to yet is to fix a large jubilee clip onto the plenum, so that when the bonnet is closed its in contact with the metal foil sheet under the bonnet.
