Views on the most iconic iterations of the 911. Personally my top 3 - I would vote for 2.7 Carrera rs ducktail. Close second the 930 turbo 5 speed. Third 993 2s.

‘‘Iconic iterations’’ doesn’t necessarily mean the greatest examples.

It probably means the ‘poster boy’ models that have defined the 911’s image in the public’s imagination.

Agree that the 2.7RS and the 930 Turbo fit that brief, but no 993, not even the GT2, had such a recognisable status.

You probably have to move onto the water-cooled RS models to get close to that kind of quality.

Re 930 Turbo....the iconic car is the 1975 model year car. Those early 1975 cars were the homologation cars for the 934 and 945 race cars. I was lucky enough to to drive one recently....absolutely fantastic car to drive.

For me, a mid 70s RSR race car.

Ask most non car people (around my age) and I would suggest they would say an iconic 911 is

A 80’s 3.2, ideally in red.

There is only one for me - the one that got me into 911's when I was a teenager.... The Yellowbird!

It obviously depends on your age.

The poster car.

The stereotype.

The enthusiasts choice.

The original.

My choice.

I would agree with much of the above.

The 911 came of age with the ‘73 2.7RS, and it gained the 911 a new following amongst those who understood.

But, in quick succession, the hammer-blow model was the 911 Turbo from 1974, with the glamorous looks and performance figures to turn heads and sell posters.

And, then, the classic Carrera 3.2 epitomised the 911’s rise in popularity through the indulgent ‘80s.

Everything since the aircooled cars has tagged onto that ancestory of the original ‘911’ name - for marketing purposes.

Everyone has nailed it. If by Iconic, you mean iconic, then if I may summarise the above.....

The original 911 shape.

The 911 with a ducktail.

The wide-bodied 911 with a whale-tail.

I appreciate it was more of a marketing exercise, but this is the one I want most. So that probably makes it the most iconic for me.

Totally agree with that. I don’t think they ever bettered the simplicity and look of the early cars, they’re such beautiful cars

Yes - purity, simplicity, narrow body, Coupe, manual, 2wd, aircooled, racing heritage - the classic ingredients of the original iconic 911 - summed up in the opening scenes of Steve McQueen’s Le Mans film.

Although, it was the fat brooding Turbo that turned it into a superstar.

That one in that colour is exactly what I think of when "Porsche Turbo" is mentioned and that's despite me having lots of decent memories of my own former 996 Turbo S.

Anything with furniture on the back is out straight away. Including a ducktail. The silhouette should be completely unadulterated.

It needs to have a motorsport derived engine, that revs to 9k and makes an incredible noise. And it needs a manual transmission.

Only one answer. The 991.2 GT3 Touring. An instant iconic 911. And for me, the greatest 911 of them all.

I had one of those. In fact that could even be my car, because Paragon is who I sold it to.

But they were better on posters than the road. Never meet your heroes and all that.
