I’ve recently bought an e85 (Z4) and I’m experiencing terrible sway/wobbling from side to side when driving. Does anyone know what the problem might be? Is this a common problem? It flew through service and MOT so not really sure why I’m finding this.

Any help would be much appreciated!

Assuming it is about you having to correct you trajectory it may be the gears in the steering column sticking - Google sticking steering Z4. If it's just plain old steering wheel wobble, then start with balancing the wheels/tyres and (whilst spinning on the machine) checking for the wheel/tyre runoffs.

How much mileage? Steering can get twitchy at higher speeds when either the ARB or lollipop bushes on the front suspension are getting sworn out. Or it could need an alignment.

Also does it still have runflats on all 4 wheels? If so get them binned.

Hi - thanks for the help. Turns out the garage I bought it from bizarrely had the pressure on some of the tyres at 57 psi and some at 26! Not wonder it was all over the place! The wheels are also run flats, which I’m going to have replaced.

Well I wouldn't be visiting that garage again!

Z4s do have a tendency to tramline. As others have said getting rid of the runflats and renewing any tired suspension bushes usually helps no end, although they can suffer from "sticky steering". It seems to afflict early (pre-facelift) cars more.

There is loads of useful advice and tips on these cars on z4forum so it's well worth a visit, even just for research as you don't need to join.

Thanks, I didn’t know there was a Z4 forum! I’ll check it out. Cheers.
