no legal reason why not but Motor Sports Association - was RAC - have regulations requiring competitors who are no longer competing on the public road to remove them or strike them out.

I understood that there was a law against it - but I've never actually confrmed it. I was told that you had to take them off - or strike through - as RichardC says. I guess it could easily be an RAC Motorsports thing as I was told this when I used to do sprinting years ago.

My understanding is also that they should be removed or have a strike through them.

From what I've heard you are very unlikely to get any trouble from the BiB but in can lead to awkward questions from an insurance company should you be involved in an incident as they indicate the car is being used in competition and there fore it is unlikely your insurance will be valid.

I'm guessing that if BMW are fitting them as standard then this would be overlooked under such circumstances.

MSA regs now require that numbers are completely removed after a competitive event - strike through is not good enough. You can, in theory, be punished by the MSA if they find out you have not removed numbers but it is not illegal not to do so. I have ever heard of anyone actually getting busted by the MSA but as every set of event regs I've seen always says to remove numbers, then I guess it's an issue that's not insignificant to them.

If it's just boy-racer type numbers to make it look like you are a real racer, there's nothing illegal about them - look at the Herbie 53 VWs for example.

There's old wives tales about Police taking numbers being on a car as meaning you're involved in an illegal race but I'm sure that today, this is rubbish.

A company I used to work for changed their company car scheme to Vauxhall only. To stop us all leaving on the spot they brought in a selection of vauxhalls for us to test drive.
One of them was a lotus carlton.
The bibs arrived as they thought we were having an illegal rally because the cars all had numbers on the side and the carlton was clocked at well over a ton on the M56 a number of times

One guy also left the frontera marooned in the middle of a lake too

You mean this place - what on earth have they done to it, or is it an "enhanced" shot?

Rheims / Reims. A public roads circuit about 5M long which held F1 GP's up till '66.

Photoshop'd - clearly. (I'm referring to Towman's picture with the brightly coloured signwriting, of course).
