Hi all. Does anyone know if it’s possible to get a 3.5” hard disc powered from a USB or anything other than a proper PSU?

I’m trying to take advantage of a 2tb drive I’ve been given as an external drive but only have a usb to sata lead so need to power it somehow.

Thanks for any advice!

Assuming it's just an HDD without a caddy or case:

You can buy 3.5" enclosures with a USB data connection and an additional mains adaptor for about £20 on Amazon if you can justify spending money.

Thanks guys. Just bought the one from Amazon.

Although I have the sata to usb already I thought I could just buy a power lead stand alone.

If you're going to use it for significant amounts of data transfer think about ensuring some cooling, especially if the weather ever warms up.

2.5" drives don't tend to generate as much heat as 3.5", and 3.5" drives really expect a degree of cooling air flow if they're doing much more than just spinning.
