At risk of encouraging people to bid against me (not that I'm bidding yet)....

What are our thoughts on:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=4560819339&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&rd=1

If it goes for less than £20K and you spend a couple of grand on it could be a cheap 996 for a year or 2...

Umm, £7,509 for "fluids, filters and belts", I'd think twice before I used that garage again.

I think that includes the engine change (it was a 30K mile engine). At least, I hope it did!

I was about to edit my post to say I'd misread the ad and yes it did include the engine change - he was just saying they did the "fluids, filters and belts" at the same time.

Well, personally, since the price of 996s even through respected independents seems to be dropping like a stone, I would rather spend a few extra K and get one that way.

As a for instance Cridfords have a C2 tip with 83K for 25K; 911 Virgin have several under 30K; Portiacraft the same; and so on.

I viewed a lovingly (read OVER) described ebay porker the other day on behalf of a friend. Absolute pile. I'd see the car in the flesh first.

I met a Welsh chap about 15 years ago when I was buying and selling a few Porsche parts. He didn't come from an automotive background IIRC but intended to set himself up on the Porsche parts game. Which he did - that company's name was Discount 9 Autotech. I guess he must have employed a Porsche technician who does know something about the mechanical side of these cars then if he's graduated to servicing etc.

I guess you don't want to be bidding much above £20k for the car though if the trade is buying them at that level right now (which it is)

Thanks rubystone, I was thinking if I could get it for less than £19K it would be a half-decent deal. Otherwise, as others have pointed out, makes more sense to pay a bit more and get the protection a dealer offers. Even if I don't buy it I'll post up here what it went for though.

Well, it made £18,600 but I didn't go for it. Without wishing to N&S let's just say it didn't quite check out as one might hope!

Back to the saving up a deposit plan I guess!
