I'm on EE and so far today I've had half a dozen calls from phone numbers similar to mine, only the last two or three digits are different.

I rang one back this morning, he had had a similar call as well.

Anyone else getting this?

Is it a scam? (can't see what it's likely to achieve other than find an active number if I actually answer)

SD.

I'm on Vodafone and have had a couple of them. Answered both, but they hung up straight away. No idea what this is about. There's another thread about scam calls that people have reported this too. Might be the Hermes scam one.

I believe that scammers can interfere with the caller ID software to give a false and fake call number. Why cannot technology be used to attack these cheats?

EE, I have had a few too.

If I'm not expecting a call I tend not bothering to answer calls I don't recognise - legit callers will leave a message.

Had the same on my work phone, was strange as I only use it for business purposes and have never filled out any sort of online forms on it where I inputted my number.

I questioned the carphone warehouse guy on how he got the number and he said they got it from Vodafone.

Are carriers selling off numbers to these companies? Who knows?

I've had a couple as well. I'm on Vodafone. Thought it was odd. I just let them ring through.

I use TrueCaller, which used to block almost everything. These days a lot more are able to get through.

Had this one day last week, three calls in a day from mobile numbers very similar to mine.

I never answer unknown numbers but they didn’t leave a message unlike the continuous answerphone message I get from Chinese speaking recorded messages from spam numbers.

They can, and they do.

It can and it used to, but these cheats pay more to the carriers than any individual subscriber (you) and the organisation in place to stop them (OFCOM) is pathetic, useless, and confused about who it actually represents. Not corrupt, no, not corrupt at all, the CLI rules that were in place and served this purpose very well were outdated and needed removing.

Oh fk it, they can sue me OFCOM are corrupt.

I've had the same thing over the past 3 months - but it seems to have gone quiet now.

I did wonder if it was people trying to sell a number close to mine for vanity purposes (the numbers that called all had identical first 5 digits).

I never answered, so have no idea what they were about.
