Best Way To Display Location And Date On Map

I'm working on 4 WW2 diaries and want to put the locations and dates on a map.
I know that I can use personal maps on Google maps but are there any other "better" ways to do it?
I'm not trying to replicate Napoleon's invasion of Russia map! Just a simple "he was here on these dates".

A bit clunky, but save the map view as a JPEG and and add a text box ??

If this is for a website and you know a bit of JavaScript, then Google Maps API will do this
