When Little QQ1 turned 21 two years ago, I got him an (old!) MX-5 which he obviously loves. Little QQ2 is shortly turning 21 as well and now I have a bit of a dilemma: Do I do the boring and predictable thing and also get him an MX-5 thus treating them equally, or do I get him something slightly different, say something like an MR2? Budget is up to around £8k, maybe a bit more for something special. It definitely can't be something totally mismatched like an old Boxster or an RX8; apart from the perceived differential treatment, Little QQ2 is at university at a right bloody dump and insurance for those are just stupid. I think an MX-5 is probably still the best option, but I thought it'd be worth asking for some opinions.

Sounds like an MX5 would be the best choice to me - avoid any resentment about it being better/different etc, although you may have to run the hurdle of "his is newer than mine!". Easy to insure, fun to have them side by side.

I got them both the same make, engine size and model of car.

H1 was three years older and therefore H2's car was a three years newer and also a newer model.
H2 therefore benefitted in theory, but neither son really let it bother them.

Both of them needed a medium sized car with room to ferry stuff to/from Uni, but I think they would have liked an MX5, given the choice.

why dont you ask him what he wants for an £8k budget?

An MX5 is great and all, but he might prefer an estate car for going camping or mountain biking, for example...

This. Although a genuinely nice thing for you to do, let him make his own decisions in life.

Actually I already have. Given that I'd already bought the eldest an MX-5, there was already an expectation of something of similar magnitude. Little QQ2's response when I spoke to him was "DEFINITELY an MX-5 or something like an MX-5 please! You're the car nut though so I'll leave the choice to you..." Hence, the situation I'm currently in!

Perfect, you have answered your own question then. MX5 it is!

gievn the budget is 8k the best alternative to an mx-5 would be a gt86 (just about in price) but from the sounds of it, MX5
