718 GT4 tyres

Hi all, looking for some help/advice please..

Looking at a 718 GT4 and had a question around tyres. Do people run alternative tyres to the Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 for everyday road driving? Do owners keep a spare set for track and road driving?

I would like to do some track work in the future, however are the Cup 2 not really designed for our inclement weather or do you just need to be careful and adjust for conditions? Having not run a newer Porsche for a while, I suspect the whole N-rated element comes into this too?

I run N-rated Michelin Pilot Sport 4Ss on my original wheels, and I put my original Cup 2s onto a second set of wheels that I bought from my OPC which I'll be using for track days. Not a cheap option, but it's the best option IMHO.

Big, fat, wide Cup2s in low temps and/or wet weather are not nice to drive on in my experience, hence the change for me. I use my car all year round, but it's not a daily driver. If you're a sunny days only driver you should be fine on Cup2s unless you get caught out on a road trip etc.

I've had the Dunlop equivalent of Cup 2s from factory. I haven't found them to be treacherous in poor conditions on the road at all, so I think they are more useable than Cup 2s from the experience of many on here. I also have no complaints on track, they're set and forget for the day in terms of pressures.

But Pilot Sport 4 S would be better still on the road I'm sure

Thanks Twinfan - looked on black circles and could not see N-rated version of the PS4S. That is great news as had these on my previous car..

I would like to drive all year round, maybe not so much in winter. Maybe I keep the Cup 2 and get a set PS4S too..

Thanks Xfe, the indy has mentioned they have a spare set of new Dunlop's that came off a GT4, I assume this could be a good alternative.

From what I've read, the Dunlops are definitely better in the wet than the Cup2s so are likely to be a good halfway between a Cup2 and a PS4S if you only want to run one tyre all year....

I am going for a wheel colour change, as not completely happy with the Satin Aurum factory colour (on GT Silver car) so maybe makes sense to swap out at the same time. Rather tempting is that Michelin are doing their offer on a set of 4 tyres..

PS4S are a all-around great tyre and will work well for the occasional track day if you’re going a few days for the year for a puddle around, and don’t want to spend to get another set of tyres and wheels just for the occasion.
Just manage the pace and temps/pressures on very hot days and just drive to the limit of grip available.

In fact people tend to run PS4S on these cars on track like a wet tyre, for the colder wetter months and days, where the Cup2 can’t cope.
Can run at very good pace here and still generate quite a g-load. Perform very well.


Ginetta GTA runs a full race series on a these tyres.
Granted G55/56 is a little bit lighter but goes to show the breadth of the operating window of the tyre.

Yes, would prefer PS4S, I replaced them on my RS5 and it totally transformed car, however looks like they are out of stock for the rears with N-rating, only fronts available, looked on Blackcircles, Kwikfit and Camskill.

Wondering whether just using it on the Cup 2's for now and changing over for PS4S when they are in stock. Sort of makes the decision for me. Not sure whether investing in a spare set of Dunlops is really going to give any more wet grip for the sake of spending a few hundred quid for the Michelin's. First world problems..

Given the time of year, I'd be tempted to stick with Cup2s until Autumn but definitely grab PS4Ss when you can. Supply is very intermittent.

I ran two sets of rims for my 718 GT4, which I sold last week - Dunlops (as supplied) and PS4S's. The Michelins are a far better road tyre, less road noise and inclined to tramline. Car just feels much much more compliant on them.

I'd bought Cup2's to replace the Dunlops but didn't have the car long enough to need them. So i've now got a spare set of GT4 rims (black) and brand new Cup2's that I can arrange to be fitted. Will get them advertised when I get around to it but let me know if you're interested.

2 sets of rims makes a lot of sense if you're going to track your car and use it in different seasons.

Anyone run the Pirelli P-zero tyres on their GT4? Are they any good? Looks like Camskill has the sizes for n-rated. Michelin’s seem to be thin on the ground especially for the rears. Customer services says 8 weeks lead time for re-stock!

Just for completeness, I managed to get a full set of Michelin PS4S off Camskill, they currently have stock. Just hope they turn up n-rated!
