For those of us who re home dogs from "poor" backgrounds its something we dread. They come to us from broken backgrounds and just as their learning to find that life is about trusting a human again, we have to let them go, either voluntary or to end their pain, possibly brought on by their previous owners lack of ownership. It hurts, till you find that dog that says "hey lets be friends. I need one, and you look like that you need one too" .
