Reporting friend for drunk driving and social repercussions

This might end up with me just venting but I'd like your opinions on the situation and my friends' actions.
So I was at the pub with a few mates last week and the friend of a friend turns up in her car, we'd all got a taxi there. We all do some shots, a few pints and we're all having a good time. I'm actually getting on really well with the friend of a friend but then she gets in her car and turns the engine on, now I'm certain she's unfit to drive (at LEAST: 2 jagerbombs, a pint and some 'mysterious white powder' but that's all I can remember for certain so possibly more). Thing is I'm completely sloshed at this point so I'm having trouble forming sentences, etc, so it's not having much effect leaning into her window trying to convince her not to drive and to top it off she drives over my foot as she leaves which confirms everything.
I walk back into the pub, casually tell the others she's driven off and they don't seem to care so I walk out again and ring 999. I give 999 the relevant details; grey volkswagen passat, 65 reg, location, etc and as I'm hanging up the person who's friends with the drink driver comes up to me and says 'who ya ringing? the police?' I respond no, it's another friend but I don't think she believes me. I then leave the pub and get a taxi home because I can't be assed for a drunk argument over reporting someone's friend. Wake up the next day and my sister and her friend ask me about it, I'm pretty defensive over it and say yeah of course I reported her, she was pissed, etc, I drive 6 hours a day in the evenings for work I won't let her drive drunk and risk some innocent. They don't have much to say, I guess as they know I'm morally in the green but it's still a kind of a social grey area reporting a friend (even if they fully deserve it).
The girl that drove drunk made it home no problem thank god and seeing that group of people earlier today they all seemed fine with me and invited me out again but I haven't been out with them so I'm half expecting it to come up again lol. Again this experience reminded me why I prefer drinking at someone's house in small groups of people I know. I do feel like somewhat of an asshole because what if she was fit to drive and I'm wrong even if I felt certain, even in that situation the worst that'll happen is quick breathe test and she'll be on her way (and I'll get the next few rounds at the pub lol). I'd rather be a wrong asshole then let someone drive drunk and I think most people that care about driving, like you guys, would agree, it's just annoying my irl friends are still silently on the fence.

Not being melodramatic but who's to say she actually got home safe? She could have killed somebody and not even remember it. Without obvious car damage or a body being found in a ditch who's to know?
Not something you want on your conscience, especially seeing as you're apparently the only one in the group that actually has one.
It wouldn't surprise me if she's already disqualified / not insured etc. There's a reason she wasn't sticking around.

Thanks Un1corn and Pastie Bloater, I can't see myself talking to this girl again but I still have to deal with my sister and our friends. You're both right though she's making absolute dogst decisions and endangering others. It's just staggering to me as a young and enthusiastic driver how some people can care so little or standby and let others do such stupid st under the guise of 'they're my friend' or 'it's their life'.

I dont like drink drivers either , but I rely on the authorities to do the policing not some drunken curtain twitcher .

We’re rural, when we moved out I was quite surprised at the “five and drive” attitude although it tends to either be the local workforce (farmers and builders) driving home from one village pub to another or the local golfists who think the rules don’t apply to them.
I actually drive on Friday night after a bottle of Sol, first time in years I can ever remember driving after an alcoholic drink (I’d forgotten I needed to pick up the takeaway).
I’d be fked without my license so for probably 15 years I’ve simply not driven if I’ve had a single drink.
I’d have no bother dobbing someone in under the circumstances of the OP.

During my lifetime I've twice witnessed the long term devastation caused by drink drivers to innocent people and their wider families.
I've also seen a popular and vivacious twenty-something turn into a recluse, having killed a friend whilst drink/drug driving.
Without the slightest doubt, I'd have no hesitation in reporting anyone who I suspected of drink driving.

Where do you draw the line? A little old lady being mugged? "not calling the police, she can do it"
Seeing your neighbour being burgled? "Sorry mate, police should have been here watching your house"
The police have always relied on people reporting incidents for them to investigate; there is a balance between situations like this and curtain twitching.
By comparison, I wouldn't report someone for doing 90 on the motorway. I would report people if they started doing repeated 90mph burnouts and drag races outside my house where kids are on their bikes on a quiet cul de sac.

Sounds like the use of strange white powder happens fairly often.... Do you report those friends too?

You've drawn an arbitrary line in the sand for what criminal offences you find acceptable in your circle of friends.
I suspect we all do the same so the thread will prompt a multitude of views dependent on where we all see that line.
